@DrSimEvans Please defend your own numbers . With 28 million UK homes if each was running a heat pump in mid winter with a COP of 3 that would be about 56 GW of electricity required . We have much less gas power generation GW , maxed out at times now, so a big problem with no wind.

@DrSimEvans We already have almost no spare gas fired power generation capacity when the winter winds don't blow (hence the supply/demand warnings) so if we move homes from gas boilers to heat pumps we'll need lots of new dispatchable power generation at such times. The forgotten problem.

@g__j @MLiebreich Those of us who had chief chem eng responsiblities for worldwide companies think otherwise. Efficiency helps but is not the main god when renewables are cheap and we need solutions for the dunkelflaute which michael etc and the efficiency obsessed oppose. Its not Hydrogen.
