I-95 Drug Busts Target Major Traffickers in NC Northampton County Sheriff's Office, NC 4/6/2026 Press Release Drug Mule Nabbed on I-95 On April 3, 2026, Northampton County Sergeant J. Velez was monitoring the south bound lanes of travel on Interstate I-95 in Garysburg, NC. At the 21:11 hour, Sergeant Velez conducted a traffic stop on a grey in color Kia motor vehicle for failing to maintain lane control. A brief interview was conducted, noticing deceptive behavior on the travel history of the driver. Due to a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle and the operator admitting to having marijuana, a probable cause search was conducted. Inside of the vehicle revealed four large boxes containing approximately 134 pounds of marijuana. The driver, twenty-four-year-old, Patrick Medina Cortorreal, of Virginia was arrested and charged with three (3) counts of Felony Trafficking in Marijuana, one (1) count of Felony Maintaining a Vehicle, and one (1) count Infraction for failing to maintain lane control. Cortorreal was given a secured bond in the amount of $60,000.00 and remanded to the Northampton County Detention Center. He was given a court date of April 16, 2026, in Northampton County. Captain W. Phelps, Sergeant W. Killian, and Deputy D. Williams assisted. Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith stated that he appreciated Sergeant J. Velez vigilance with this traffic stop and investigation. He further stated that Northampton County Sheriff's Office will continue to attempt to remove narcotics from Northampton County.
