In my op-ed for @TheEconomist, I put forward a decisive 5-step plan to reclaim Beirut, starting with declaring it a weapons-free city and enforcing the state’s full authority over security.

The state must finally assert its authority over Lebanon’s parallel army, writes Fouad Makhzoumi, a politician economist.com/by-invitation/…

Don't... The Lebanese government is reportedly considering establishing a “security zone” near the Port of Beirut to "settle" refugees fleeing southern Lebanon due "to ongoing Israeli operations against Hezbollah." This must not happen. Any form of forced demographic reconfiguration in Lebanon risks triggering an irreversible escalation into urban conflict. The area reportedly under consideration—known as the Medawar zone, located between the Port of Beirut and Dora—holds strategic and symbolic significance. It represents the primary maritime access point to East Beirut and lies within a predominantly Christian sector of the capital. This alone makes the proposal highly sensitive. First, the "resettled" refugees would be targeted by Hezbollah infiltration which would draw Israeli strikes on the capital as it happened in the south and Dahiye suburb already. Moreover, such a plan could lead, initially on a temporary basis and later more permanently, to the settlement of populations from the south, where Hezbollah maintains significant influence. This raises serious concerns about the potential for the group to expand its presence into East Beirut, altering the local delicate balance and gaining access to a critical stretch of the capital’s waterfront. Given the history of tensions, violence, and political assassinations associated with Hezbollah, it is highly likely that residents of East Beirut would strongly oppose such a development. Resistance could escalate into confrontation, raising the specter of renewed urban warfare, the weakening or paralysis of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and a broader collapse of central state authority. Instead, the government should consider directing displaced populations toward less volatile areas, such as the northern Bekaa region between Baalbek and Hermel, where relocation would pose fewer risks of sectarian friction. Any policy that reshapes the demographic or security dynamics of Beirut—particularly East Beirut—would be deeply destabilizing, potentially violating principles of international law and risking a return to civil conflict. Given the current limitations of the Lebanese state, including its inability to fully contain Hezbollah or secure its borders against Jihadi threats, the local populations in East Beirut and Mount Lebanon could call on the United States either to intervene or empower the neighborhoods to prevent strategic areas like Beirut’s waterfront from falling under the control of militant groups.

No one is debating the issue of Shia as part of multi-confessional ! The issue a designated terrorist group Hezbollah is infiltration into the Lebanese societies and chased by Israel. They can defend themselves in South Lebanon or Bekaa valley or give up their weapons . Plenty of free shiites rejecting Hezbollah.

SHAME on the Lebanese government & Governor of Beirut ! While predominantly Christians in Ashrafieh & Beirut Port area have always opposed Hezbollah, Nawaf Salam’s government is preparing to build facilities to house Hezbollah refugees and their families in this sensitive Christian area — turning it into a ticking time bomb according to MTV ! Instead of providing shelters in SOUTH LEBANON or Bekaa valley, disarming them, and placing them in controlled camps under army & the Mechanism, they are giving Hezbollah safe haven in Christian neighborhoods! This is clear complicity. Prime Minister @nawafsalam and the Governor of Beirut @MarwanaboudGov1 (who did NOTHING) must be investigated for sanctions by the US — they are protecting Hezbollah terrorists as part of displaced. If Nabih Berri and his Hezbollah allies could shut down Parliament and stage sit-ins, why are opposition politicians and Christian leaders NOT organizing a massive sit-in RIGHT NOW at the Port entrance to STOP this dangerous settlement? ENOUGH! Protect Lebanon’s Christians and sovereignty! #SanctionNawafSalam #SanctionBeirutGovernor #StopHezbollahInfiltration #KarantinaIsNotHezbollahLand mtv.com.lb/News/1670217

Senator @SenWarren Hezbollah/Iran murdered 241 U.S. Marines in 1983 and has terrorized Lebanon for 40+ years—assassinations, bombings, economic ruin, and endless suffering for the Lebanese people. Yet you obsess over Hezbollah’s “humanitarian disaster” while ignoring the real victims: American heroes killed and millions of Lebanese brutalized by this terrorist group. You care more about protecting Iran’s proxy than honoring the dead or the Lebanese who’ve begged to be free of Hezbollah’s grip for decades. Shameful. #HezbollahTerror #RememberTheMarines
Elizabeth Warren@SenWarren

Pay attention to Lebanon. Trump and Netanyahu started a regional war in the Middle East, creating a humanitarian disaster. And now, the Israeli army has killed over 1,000 people in Lebanon—about 20% of them are kids. Congress should not bankroll this escalating war of choice.

Abbas Ibrahim, former Director General of Lebanon’s General Security, has revealed his true allegiance: openly supporting Hezbollah’s ! During his long tenure, the military court became the harshest instrument of repression against free speech—persecuting journalists, activists, and critics with arrests, trials, and blacklists that targeted people inside Lebanon and abroad, silencing dissent under the guise of ‘security.’ He made repeated trips to the United States, acting as a double agent: mediating on hostages and regional issues while protecting Hezbollah’s interests and evading real accountability. Reports even suggested he faced potential US sanctions threats over his ties to the terror group. Now, with political ambitions clear, he’s positioning himself to become the next Speaker of Parliament—a dangerous move that would entrench militia influence at the heart of Lebanese legislation. Enough with protecting those who serve terror over the state! Lebanon deserves real accountability. #AbbasIbrahim #SanctionsNow #HezbollahComplicit #FreeSpeechRepression #LebanonFirst

I was delighted to meet with Her Excellency Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad at the Embassy of Lebanon, accompanied by DCM Wesam Boutros. Our discussion focused on the current challenges facing Lebanon and explored meaningful ways in which the Lebanese-American community can support her efforts to help the country restore its full sovereignty. A key priority we addressed was ensuring the Lebanese Armed Forces exercise complete control over Lebanese territory, free from the presence of any armed groups. The Lebanese people have endured significant hardships for many years. It is our shared hope that future generations will enjoy lasting peace, prosperity, and positive relations both within Lebanon and with its neighbors. I remain optimistic about the potential for constructive collaboration and progress toward these important goals.

That is the reason what I stated above must take place in coordination with municipalities, local internal security, and the army. This is the first step! Demonstrations are the second step! Fear does not resolve serious issues. Where are the representatives whom the people elected? Why were they elected?

From Beirut to the Mountains to Akkar: Protest Wave – Hezbollah, Give Up Your Weapons! The Lebanese people are voicing deep concerns about the country’s future—not primarily because of Israel’s strikes on Hezbollah, but due to the massive influx and presence of refugees . Many worry that some refugees are armed, posing security risks, while some wanted by Israel live in buildings, creating hazards for residents and communities. These are legitimate fears amid Lebanon’s ongoing crises. Local leadership—from Beirut to Akkar, Zahle, and the Shouf mountains—has failed the people by not adequately preparing municipalities, internal security forces, or the army for this large-scale wave of displacement and its consequences. Right now, what can ordinary citizens do? Organize large, peaceful demonstrations in affected areas to demand that Hezbollah surrender its weapons and allow the local municipalities and internal security & Lebanese Armed Forces to establish a true monopoly on arms. The people must rise up and make their voices heard loudly and clearly. Apply strong, public pressure on figures like Nabih Berri and Hezbollah’s leadership—this message needs to resonate domestically and reach the international community. What Lebanese people are waiting for? The time for action is now, before the situation deteriorates further. Lebanon’s stability and future depend on reclaiming state control and addressing these root challenges together. #Free_Lebanon_From_Hezbollah
