Alright, read to the end because it’s worth it. You’ve been smoking for 4 years, about 5 sticks per day, you smoke only cigarettes, and you’ve noticed no obvious side effects yet. That doesn’t mean damage isn’t happening, it only means it hasn’t become clinically obvious. Here is my professional advice and possible solution to you as someone who genuinely wants to quit smoking. I’ll approach this therapy session in three important steps used in smoking cessation: Education: understanding what happens in your body when you smoke and why quitting feels almost impossible. Pharmacology: how drugs can significantly help during cessation. Behavioral changes: what you must do to make smoking unattractive and unnecessary. 1. EDUCATION It’s important you understand that cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a cholinergic agonist. When you smoke, Nicotine is absorbed through the lungs, it reaches the brain within seconds. In the brain, nicotine stimulates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) especially the α4β2 subtype leading to an increase in dopamine. This dopamine surge is responsible for the positive feelings you experience after smoking: Calmness Elevated mood Alertness Temporary stress relief Nicotine also affects other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, serotonin, and endorphins, which further reinforce the experience. Now here’s the problem. If nicotine only rewarded the brain with pleasure, smoking wouldn’t be a serious issue, right? But nicotine is naturally addictive. With continuous smoking: ✓Your brain reduces natural dopamine production ✓Nicotinic receptors become desensitized ✓The brain compensates by demanding more nicotine This desensitization explains why you moved from 1 stick per day to 5 sticks per day. And if nothing changes, the number will keep increasing because the nicotine concentration needed to achieve the same effect keeps rising. There is no stable endpoint to this process. Continued receptor desensitization eventually leads to dopamine dysregulation, severe withdrawal symptoms, cardiovascular complications, and in extreme cases, de*th That is why quitting early matters. 2. PHARMACOLOGY Certain medications are used in smoking cessation to prevent dopamine crash and severe withdrawal. These include: Nicotine replacement therapy (patch, gum, lozenge) •Bupropion •Varenicline You don’t just wake up and quit smoking overnight unless you’re not an addict. Once smoking becomes a habit or lifestyle, abrupt cessation can do more harm than good. What these drugs do is: Replace or modulate nicotine in a controlled, slow manner. Allow the brain to gradually recover and resume normal dopamine production. For example: Nicotine patches provide steady, low-dose nicotine without the harmful effects of smoking. Bupropion increases dopamine and norepinephrine availability. Varenicline partially stimulates nicotinic receptors while blocking nicotine’s rewarding effects, making smoking feel pointless. 3. BEHAVIORAL CHANGES If you truly want to quit smoking, you must be able to answer these three questions honestly: When do you smoke? Where do you smoke? Why do you smoke? Drugs alone are not enough especially as an addict. If you know when you smoke, you can consciously replace that time with another activity. If there’s a specific place you enjoy smoking, avoid it deliberately. If your reason for smoking is the “good feeling,” then replace it with activities that naturally release endorphins, such as: Physical exercise Social bonding Intimacy and good s*x 😉 BONUS POINT Common side effects of smoking include: Increased heart rate (palpitations) Increased blood pressure Vasoconstriction Long-term cardiovascular and pulmonary damage Smoking is simply not worth the risk. FINAL NOTE Visit a licensed pharmacist or medical doctor and start a proper cessation plan. Quitting smoking may be difficult but it is not impossible. Many addicts have successfully quit You can be one.

I have never been one for New Year resolutions shit all my life, but I have made one for 2026: to rise above average in all my endeavors. One thing about some professions or careers is that they come with their own attitudes, perspectives and lifestyle. Some teachers are rich enough to buy Ferraris and more, but because they are teachers, nurses, pharmacists, etc., the profession has reconfigured their mindset in such a way that success means different things to them. The Wike vs Naval Officer Saga: Power, Land, and Misplaced Authority So, here’s what really went down. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike showed up at a disputed land in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, a plot the FCTA said was being developed illegally. On getting there, he was stopped by a group of armed naval officers guarding the property. Wike, being Wike, demanded to know who approved the building and asked for documents. The naval officer in charge stood his ground, claiming they were acting under “orders” and that the land belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff. From there, words flew. Wike accused them of intimidation and land grabbing. The officer insisted he was only following instructions from his superiors. Now, here’s the truth many people are missing, both men were operating within their perceived authority, but one clearly crossed the line. Wike, as FCT Minister, is the chief custodian of all lands in the capital. That’s his legal jurisdiction. The naval officer, on the other hand, might have been acting under military command, but the land issue he was defending was purely civil. The military has no business interfering in such matters. So, who’s wrong? The naval officer! Not because he disobeyed Wike personally, but because he allowed military power to spill into a civilian affair, something our democracy has been struggling to separate for years. His loyalty to command doesn’t justify obstructing lawful civil authority. At the end of the day, this clash wasn’t just about land. It exposed a bigger problem, how some uniformed men still see themselves above civil institutions.
