10/5/25 #Cumbria - The Lesser Twayblade (Neottia cordata) is a rare #orchid in England, and is only really present in significant numbers in the Northern regions. Records would suggest it is still fairly local, though it is probably heavily overlooked #wildflowerhour

When I was eight years old my teacher at school asked us to write about our hero, and I chose David Attenborough as mine. I wrote about how he had championed wildlife and introduced us to the weird and wonderful ways of the natural world in ways that noone else had done. My teacher didn’t agree with me that he was a hero, but she did tell me that she thought he was a great role model. I’d like to think, that on this great man’s 100th birthday that my teacher would now agree with me that he is a hero and someone that we could all learn a great deal from.

Italy serves up another fabulous hybrid orchid - it really is the gift that keeps on giving. I popped out for a little pre-dinner recce yesterday evening and found this, Ophrys biancae x O. lacaitae. A cracker in warm evening light, and every bit as good shared with guests today.

Lovely orchid hybrids found yesterday west of Etna here in Sicily - Ophrys bertolonii x Ophrys passionis. I love orchid-hunting in this beautiful region of Italy. Always a surprise possible around every corner.
