The Trump Kennedy Center has made the decision to end the EXCLUSIVE partnership with the Washington Opera so that we can have the flexibility and funds to bring in operas from around the world and across the U.S. Having an EXCLUSIVE relationship has been extremely expensive and limiting in choice and variety. We approached the Opera leadership last year with this idea, and they began to be open to it. We have spent millions of dollars to support the Washington Opera’s exclusivity, and yet they were still millions of dollars in the hole - and getting worse. In fact, the Washington Opera finished FY 2025 with a $7.2 million deficit, not accounting for the $5.8 million additional expenses we gave them. Additionally, Washington Opera ticket sales in 2024 comprised only 4% of total revenue across the Center - making the Opera 8% of combined revenue, but 16% of combined expenses for us. Having an exclusive Opera was just not financially smart. And our patrons clearly wanted a refresh. The Trump Kennedy Center leadership team will continue to do what it takes to ensure we save and protect America’s premier Arts Institution for decades to come. And we are so grateful for the incredible corporate partners and generous donors who have given us a record-breaking fundraising year. To my friends on the political Right: I understand the feeling that people are putting words into Charlie Kirk's mouth. At some level, I agree and share your frustration. Try to remember: a lot of people loved Charlie. It is natural for them to debate his views and his legacy. In fact, I think Charlie would welcome that. But for now, let's celebrate our friend, remember his impact, and save the debate for after his funeral.
