Busy start to pitfalling here at #calperum. 104 animals and it’s just the first afternoon! A beautiful southern mallee ctenotus (Ctenotus atlas) about to be released. Handled under permits #WildOZ

What this means for the local wildlife, I’m not too sure. But hollow dwelling species like this brush tail possum and going to have even more competition for resources and shelter. Which can’t be great for a species that’s already had large local declines over the last 100 years

The hollows in this patch of remnant scrub were particularly important as much of the old river gums in adjoining areas was burnt in the 2014 Bangor fire. Which large portions of what is now the Wapma thura - southern flinders national park.

Tree hollows are a precious resource on the western slopes of the southern flinders. And they’ve recently gotten a whole lot scarcer. This is the aftermath of a “fuel reduction burn” that decimated a number of healthy, centuries old, river gums earlier this year

Back in Australia now but looking back on some of the stunning wildlife from the last few weeks in #borneo. Probably the nicest frog I saw while away was this Green bush frog (Philautus bunitus)
