The #referee instructs a player to leave the field of play and replace their footwear. After the equipment has been changed and checked by the fourth official, the player does not wait for a signal from the referee, re-enters the field, and becomes involved in play by touching the ball in the opponents’ half.

The team captain is carelessly fouled, seems seriously injured and needs attention. The captain leaves the field of play on foot and receives treatment. Their team holds up a substitution as they find out that the injured player is able to continue after treatment.
Procedure:
➡️ one of the remaining players should wear the armband until the injured player returns
➡️ the armband may be returned to the original captain when they come back onto the field of play

The team captain is recklessly fouled and assessed on the field of play. The injury looks very serious, and it is clear that the captain is unable to continue playing and must leave the field on a stretcher.
Procedure:
➡️ one of the captain’s team-mates or their substitute must become the new captain and wear an armband, as the original captain will not return to play (same situation when the captain is sent off)

A player touches an opponent’s face with the hand/arm while challenging for the ball outside the penalty area.
What is the referee’s decision if the contact was minimal?

A player (Team A) carelessly pushes an opponent (Team B) while the ball is in play. The ball then passes over the touchline, and the Team A player picks it up to take a throw-in; however, the match officials signal that play will be restarted with a free kick to Team B. In response, the offending Team A player furiously throws the ball on the ground and waves their arms to show disagreement.
What is the referee’s decision if the player has already been cautioned during the match?

When a player prepares to take a throw-in, goal kick, or other restart, but then leaves the ball to a team-mate, the #referee must:
➡️ judge if this is a deliberate attempt to excessively delay the restart
➡️ caution (yellow card) the player who is mainly responsible for wasting time:
– the player who approached the ball first, or
– the player who finally took the restart
(the first offence during a match can result only in a warning, unless it is blatant)
➡️ make allowance for any delays when deciding about the additional time at the end of the half

A defender receives the ball from a team-mate, ‘flicks’ it up with their foot and heads it to their goalkeeper, who bends down to pick it up. However, as no opponent approaches, the goalkeeper dribbles the ball with their feet and then kicks it upfield.

At the moment of delivering the ball at a throw-in, a player has one foot outside the field of play (behind the touchline) and one foot partly inside the field of play (with the heel touching the touchline).
What is the decision if the ball is thrown and enters the field of play?

While taking a goal kick, the goalkeeper kicks the ball only a few metres. As an opponent then enters the penalty area and runs towards the ball, the goalkeeper kicks the ball again (before it has touched any other player). This second touch prevents the opponent from gaining control of the ball, denying them an obvious goal-scoring opportunity; however, the ball rebounds off the opponent’s leg and goes into the goal.

A player cannot score in the opponents’ goal IMMEDIATELY after the ball has touched their hand/arm. In this case, any touch of the ball with the hand/arm is an offence:
➡️ whether handling the ball was deliberate or accidental
➡️ even if the hand/arm was in a natural position

In the context of a handball offence outlined in Law 12, ‘immediate’ should be interpreted as ‘straight away’.
If the player dribbles, touches the ball several times, or passes the ball and receives it back, this is not considered ‘immediate’.
The only time a delay is within the ‘spirit’ of the Law is when the attacker immediately shoots and the ball rebounds to them from the goal/opponent, they shoot again and score.

An attacker (Team A) and a defender (Team B) are chasing the ball, which was last touched by the attacking team and is about to leave the field of play over the goal line. After the ball has wholly passed over the goal line, the defender recklessly pushes the attacker inside Team B’s penalty area.

During a match, the team captain passes the captain’s armband to a team-mate, who becomes the new captain on the field of play.
Is this allowed if the change is made while the ball is in play and the referee is not informed?
