On April 6, 2024, in Scott, Louisiana, my client Anthony Wayne Babino Jr., 20 years old, was waiting to get $10 in cash from a friend so he could pay for his entry into the annual Scott Boudin Festival. While waiting, he was approached by Lieutenant Brun Lavergne of the Scott Police Department. Without any justification to do so, Lavergne ordered Anthony and his friends to walk towards the festival. However, Anthony protested against having to move down a public street. Notably, Anthony was not impeding traffic nor was he loitering or prowling because he was waiting there to receive the money from a friend. As Anthony walked away, Lavergne grabbed Anthony by the neck and placed him in a carotid hold for approximately 10 seconds. As you can see from the video, Anthony was in great physical distress and was on the verge of passing out due to loss of blood circulation to his brain. The state of Louisiana has banned the use of choke holds and carotid holds.

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The family of Jawan Dallas plans to file a federal lawsuit in his death. The 36-year-old died back in July after being tased twice by a Mobile police officer during a struggle. Since then, the family has been pushing for answers surrounding his death. Dallas’ death sparked outrage and protests across the community for more transparency. Last month, a Mobile County Grand Jury found that officers were not criminally liable for his death. @AttorneyCrump instagram.com/p/C0u6knfrbl7/

Manteo, NC - How did a call for help from a 44-year-old Black man stabbed in the chest end with that same victim choking on his own blood and dying after being gunned down by a deputy with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office (SCDO)? That’s just one of the serious questions raised by attorneys for the family of Sylvester Demetrius Selby in a federal lawsuit filed yesterday against DCSO deputy Edward Glaser and Sheriff Doug Doughtie. Selby’s family is represented by renowned civil rights attorney Harry Daniels.   According to the lawsuit, the incident began the night of October 2 with a 911 call from the Selby family home. The caller requested immediate medical assistance because Selby, a father of three, had been stabbed in the chest. Instead of an ambulance, however, Deputies DuWayne Gibbs and Glaser arrived on the scene and ordered Selby to exit the residence at gunpoint.

ATLANTA - Attorneys for the family of Devonte Dawayne Brown, the 28-year-old Black man gunned down by a Cobb County Police officer Ian McConnell in August 2021, today released body camera video of the officer firing twelve shots as Brown was trapped in his vehicle.   According to the video, Brown had been boxed in by police with McConnell shouting to “Get your f***ing hands up!” Brown’s airbags are clearly deployed and he is trapped in the vehicle when Officer McConnell, under no immediate threat, fires twelve rounds into the car striking and killing Brown. McConnell can be heard on the video admitting after the shooting that Brown was trapped inside the car when he requested Fire and Rescue to extricate his body from the vehicle.   Brown had initially been pulled over for driving erratically when the incident occurred on August 18, 2021. His family is represented by renowned civil rights attorney Harry Daniels.   “Devonte Brown wasn’t a threat to anyone,” said Daniels. “This video makes it clear that he was trapped like a rat and that’s exactly how Officer McConnell treated him. He gunned him down like vermin.”

PPLING COUNTY, GA - Tremar Harris, the 37-year-old Black man who was assaulted and choked by a guard while restrained at the Appling County Jail in January 2022, has hired renowned national civil rights attorney Harry Daniels to represent him following District Attorney Keith Higgins’ failure to prosecute the guard for Aggravated Assault as recommended by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). According to the investigation and still unreleased surveillance video, Harris was a detainee at the Appling County Jail on January 29, 2022 when a guard, William Rentz, assaulted him. In fact, Harris had already been restrained in a restraint chair designed to protect mentally ill inmates from self harm when Rentz began to torture him wrapping a chain around Harris neck and choking him.

When Staff Sgt. Buck Aldridge fatally shot Leonard Cure during a roadside struggle after pulling him over for speeding, it wasn’t the first time a traffic stop involving the Camden County sheriff’s deputy had spiraled into violence. Personnel records show Aldridge was fired in August 2017 by a police department in the same Georgia county after he threw a woman to the ground and handcuffed her during a traffic stop. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office hired him nine months later.
