When you smoke cannabis, you get the munchies.
THC binds to a receptor called CB1, which sits in your brain and your gut and your fat tissue, and the activation of that receptor produces the unmistakable urge to eat an entire packet of biscuits at 11pm.
CB1 has a natural ligand. Your body makes it. It is called 2-arachidonoylglycerol, abbreviated to 2-AG, and it is synthesised directly from arachidonic acid in your cell membranes.
Arachidonic acid is built from linoleic acid.
Linoleic acid is the dominant fatty acid in seed oils.
When you eat a diet high in seed oils, your tissues become saturated with linoleic acid, which converts to arachidonic acid, which becomes the substrate for 2-AG, which activates CB1, which produces the appetite signal that human beings have been trying to manage with willpower for the last fifty years.
You are not weak. You are stoned. Mildly, chronically, endogenously stoned, on a hunger signal generated by the oil in your own salad dressing. The same biochemical pathway that makes a stoned student raid the kitchen at midnight is being run, at low volume, in everyone eating a modern diet.
The drug is in the pantry. The receptor is in the patient. The diagnosis is "lack of self-control."
Have a sit down with that one.
