Join us in Congratulations to our Director, Khaled El-Rouayheb, on his election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A deeply deserved honor for a scholar whose work on Arabic and Islamic intellectual history has shaped the field. news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/… @HarvardNELC

Our member, Turquoise Mountain, recently hosted a session at the Museum of Oxford for the #MarmaladeFestival in partnership with the #SkollWorldForum. The session discussed our #StoryLands digital archive, which explores identity through objects in a world shaped by migration✨

Harvard’s Muslim chaplains condemned a Harvard Republican Club post criticizing an Eid celebration, calling it “abhorrent” & “Islamophobic” in an email to Muslim affiliates — marking the first public rebuke of the post from University employees. buff.ly/4ZswPp0

Have you browsed through Harvard University's beautiful Islamic Heritage Project? The project homes a collection of Islamic manuscripts, published texts, and maps from across Harvard's libraries and museums. @HarvardIslamic Visit the collection here: tinyurl.com/4nypz5th.

This is a magical book. One of the brightest heirs of Eaton's paradigm. Islam as environmental history, as labour history, as multiverse; vocalized in Malay, Tamil, Hokkien, Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, Persian, English, etc.

Westerners often miss that Islam in South East Asia is a syncretization of local culture, folk traditions and Chinese influences which make it very different from Middle Eastern tradition.

In Soviet debates, Genghis Khan was alternately seen as a feudal aggressor or an agent of historical transformation. This TUESDAY come learn about the ideological struggle over the meaning of the Mongol conquest and its place in Central Asian history: daviscenter.fas.harvard.edu/events/retrosp…

Remembering Baber Johansen, Professor of Islamic Studies Emeritus, who passed away in January. A rigorous and deeply influential scholar of Islamic law, his work shaped generations of students and the field itself. He will be greatly missed. hds.harvard.edu/news/2026/03/2…

@shahanSean Have you read Hourani’s review of Orientalism? It’s brilliant, but a bit too polite.

(The stale joke about Said's Orientalism is that no one reads past the introduction, but I'm increasingly convinced that most people who name drop Said have not even read the first pages of the intro.)

Said's 3 definitions of Orientalism merit memorizing since they're often conflated. IMHO, because #1 is unavoidable and #3 an outgrowth of #2, it's most imperative to reject #2: i.e., to reject all ontological and epistemological dinstinctions between "Orient" and "Occident".
