@shahanSean Have you read Hourani’s review of Orientalism? It’s brilliant, but a bit too polite.

(The stale joke about Said's Orientalism is that no one reads past the introduction, but I'm increasingly convinced that most people who name drop Said have not even read the first pages of the intro.)

Said's 3 definitions of Orientalism merit memorizing since they're often conflated. IMHO, because #1 is unavoidable and #3 an outgrowth of #2, it's most imperative to reject #2: i.e., to reject all ontological and epistemological dinstinctions between "Orient" and "Occident".
