In earlier times, people held philosophy in great reverence and received its ideas as though they were revealed scripture. As a result, a state of intellectual duality emerged, calling for reconciliation, at whatever cost, between what Islam brought and what philosophy taught, even if this required interpreting the teachings of Islam to conform to the doctrines of the philosophers whenever there was divergence and contradiction between the two. This gave rise to various conflicting schools of thought and intellectual traditions, which led to numerous tribulations and the shedding of much blood. It also resulted in the suppression of intellectual freedom, such that the focus shifted to searching for proofs that supported pre-adopted ideas, rather than searching for reality itself, as indicated in the narrations from the Messenger of Allah and his Family. People distanced themselves from the original wellsprings of Islamic thought and no longer referred back to those reports whose transmission was certain. Nor did they give due attention to what had been narrated from the Ahl al-Bayt regarding the correction of beliefs. The aim of the Imams of guidance was to remind people of what their grandfather had brought. The reason these tribulations emerged was the adoption of erroneous views and their being regarded as part of Islam, followed by attempts to seek evidence for them from the Qurʾan and other sources, even through strained interpretation and forced reasoning. The correct approach, however, is to derive the doctrines of Islam from its original sources whose transmission is established with certainty.
