In an effort to ensure peaceful Bakrid celebrations and maintain communal harmony, members of the Muslim community in Hassan district have decided not to purchase cattle, cows, or buffaloes during this year’s Eid-ul-Adha festival. As part of the move, Muslim leaders participated in the weekly livestock fair held on Tuesday and appealed to community members to refrain from buying animals for the festival. A leader of the Muslim federation said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid controversy or disturbances during the celebrations. Referring to the cow slaughter ban in force in Karnataka, the leader stated that the community would respect the existing legal framework and would not violate the law. At the same time, he urged the government to reconsider the ban. Several community leaders and members, including Hassan District Chief Union head Amir Jan, were present during the appeal. Meanwhile, the decision has reportedly brought livestock trade in the district to a standstill, leaving farmers and cattle rearers distressed over unsold animals ahead of the festival season. The annual cattle market, which usually witnesses heavy business before Bakrid, remained largely deserted. Farmers alleged that they were facing severe financial losses due to the sudden drop in demand. A group of protesting farmers gathered at the market area and demanded intervention from the district administration. They warned of further agitation, including a possible sit-in protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office along with their livestock, if the situation is not resolved. Police and local administration officials are closely monitoring the developments. However, no official statement has yet been issued by the district administration regarding the matter. The situation remains tense ahead of the festival, with efforts reportedly underway to prevent further escalation.

A 45-year-old Indian woman from Gujarat was shot dead during a suspected robbery attempt at a supermarket in the United States, leaving her family and local community in shock. The victim has been identified as Meghnaben Patel, who had reportedly been working at the supermarket in Virginia for the last 10 years. According to her family, Meghnaben originally belonged to Jantral village in Visnagar district of Gujarat’s Mehsana region. Her parents, Karsanbhai Patel and Kapilaben, still live in the village. The incident has also sparked strong reactions online after disturbing CCTV footage from inside the store went viral on social media. According to reports, the incident took place inside a near-empty supermarket where Meghnaben was present at the counter. The viral CCTV footage allegedly shows a person wearing animal-print track pants and a grey jacket entering the store with his face covered. The culprit is then seen walking towards the counter and speaking briefly with Meghnaben. A few moments later, the suspect allegedly puts his hand inside his pocket, pulls out a gun and opens fire at close range. The woman collapses after being shot. The attacker is then seen climbing over the counter and allegedly firing again before fleeing from the supermarket. The footage also shows items falling on the floor as the suspect escapes from the scene. After receiving information about the shooting, local police immediately reached the supermarket, sealed the area and began an investigation. Authorities have also formed special teams to identify and arrest the accused. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was linked only to robbery or if there may have been another motive behind the attack. The investigation is currently ongoing. Meghnaben Patel is survived by her husband, Upendrabhai Patel, and their two children, daughter Nakshiben and son Smith. Her death has deeply affected her family members both in India and in the United States. Residents of her native village in Gujarat also expressed sadness after hearing about the incident involving a woman who had spent many years working abroad to support her family. The viral CCTV footage quickly spread online and drew strong reactions from users across social media platforms. Many users expressed grief and concern over the safety of immigrants working overseas. One user called the incident heartbreaking and said Meghnaben had simply been trying to earn an honest living. Some users questioned whether the attack was linked to robbery, while others speculated about possible personal disputes. However, police have not officially confirmed any motive so far. Several comments also criticised rising violent crime and safety concerns in the United States. At the same time, some social media posts contained hateful and racist remarks targeting communities and groups. No evidence has been released by investigators supporting such claims, and authorities have not identified the suspect publicly. Police officials are continuing to examine CCTV footage and collect evidence from the supermarket. The case has once again raised discussions online about the safety of workers, especially immigrants employed in late-night retail and convenience stores abroad. Further details are expected after police complete more questioning and forensic examination connected to the shooting.

A video of a stray dog wandering freely inside a passenger lounge at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad has set off a wave of anger on social media, with travellers and netizens questioning how an animal managed to breach the secured interiors of one of India’s largest airports. The footage, which began circulating on X on Tuesday, May 26, shows the dog perched on a table and helping itself to food left behind by passengers. The clip drew hundreds of comments, with many pointing to what they described as a failure of basic hygiene and security protocols at the facility. Airport operator GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited acknowledged the incident and said it has been working with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to address the stray dog problem on the premises. In a statement, the operator said GHMC teams have been conducting regular removal drives at the airport and that 21 stray dogs have been dealt with since January this year. It added that waste management protocols have been tightened across all service providers operating within the terminal. The response, however, did little to settle public frustration. Several users online noted that an animal reaching the inside of a passenger lounge, past multiple layers of entry and screening, raises questions that go beyond routine pest control. The airport, which handled over 2.9 crore passengers in the last financial year, has not clarified how the dog entered the area. Hyderabad has been grappling with a wider stray dog crisis, with an estimated 4.70 lakh strays across the core urban region and civic authorities struggling to keep pace with the problem.
