Three workers died and another was injured in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur on Tuesday (March 17) as they were cleaning a septic tank at a private hospital. The three deceased workers have been identified as Anmol Manjhi (25), Govind Sendre (35), and Satyam Kumar (22), residents of Simran city. Following the incident, chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai said on Wednesday (March 18) that in future such work will be allowed to be carried out only after permission is taken from the municipal corporation. In an event of not complying by this order, criminal action shall be taken, said the chief minister. According to report, the incident took place around 7 pm in the premises of the Ramkrishna Care Hospital at Pachpedi naka. According to the police, the three men were hired by a contractor. “One of them entered first and fell unconscious. The other two went in to find him. Then a fourth person went in with a rope tied to him but he too fell unconscious and was pulled out,” a police officer said. Family members and relatives of the deceased workers protested outside the hospital demanding strict action. DCP (West Zone) Sandeep Patel said Wednesday that the authorities are in the process of registering an FIR. “We have decided that from now on, if anyone gets this kind of work done without the permission of the municipal corporation, a criminal case will be registered against them. We are issuing a directive to this effect…”, said chief minister Sai. “To ensure their long-term welfare, the hospital management has voluntarily extended a comprehensive support package for each family, including financial compensation of Rs 30 lakh, monthly sustenance support of Rs20,000 for an immediate family member, full educational support for minor children, and free lifetime medical treatment for immediate kin…,” the hospital administration said in a statement.

Police in Varanasi have arrested 14 Muslim youths after a video went viral showing them holding an Iftar gathering on a boat in the Ganga. According to police, the video showed the youths eating chicken biryani during the Iftar and allegedly throwing leftovers into the river. After the video spread on social media, a complaint was filed by a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. A case was registered at Kotwali police station, and within hours, police teams conducted raids and arrested 14 individuals. ACP Vijay Pratap Singh said, “A complaint was received, and a case was registered. Two teams were formed, and action was taken quickly. Fourteen people have been arrested so far and further investigation is underway.” Police said the accused are mostly residents of the Madanpura area and have been booked under charges related to hurting religious sentiments. Officials are also probing whether food waste was deliberately thrown into the river. The incident has triggered a wider debate on religious practices, public spaces and police action. While authorities maintain that action was taken based on a complaint and evidence, opposition leaders have questioned the intent behind the arrests. Police said further investigation is ongoing, and more details will emerge as they examine the viral video and other evidence.

A self-proclaimed numerologist and ‘godman’, Ashok Kharat, also known as ‘Captain’ Kharat, has been arrested by the Nashik Crime Branch for allegedly raping a woman and exploiting multiple others under the guise of religious practices. According to police, Kharat manipulated a 35-year-old married woman by gaining her trust through rituals, occult practices, and claims of possessing divine powers. He allegedly drugged her with intoxicants mixed in food and water, hypnotised her, and repeatedly sexually assaulted her between November 2022 and December 2025. The survivor endured the abuse for nearly three years before approaching the police. Officials said the accused also threatened the woman with dire consequences, including harming her husband and ruining her life, if she resisted or spoke out. The complaint further states that Kharat exploited the victim’s religious faith to exert control over her. During a raid at Kharat’s office, identified as “Oaks Property Dealer and Developer” in Canada Corner, police seized a pen drive containing 58 obscene video clips. Investigators suspect that the footage may involve multiple victims, including some high-profile individuals. The material has been sent for forensic examination, and further revelations are expected as the probe continues. A CCTV video from the office has also surfaced, purportedly showing the accused engaging in questionable rituals with a woman before establishing physical relations. Police are verifying the authenticity and context of the footage. Kharat, a resident of Sinnar taluka, is the president of the Shri Ishaneshwar Temple Trust in Mirgaon. A former Merchant Navy employee, he later rose to prominence as a numerologist, attracting politicians, businessmen, and celebrities seeking guidance. He had come into the limelight after then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the Mirgaon temple in November 2022. Photographs of Kharat with several prominent political leaders, including Amit Shah, Eknath Shinde, and Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, have surfaced, adding a political dimension to the case. Maharashtra State Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar acknowledged knowing Kharat since 2019 but said she was unaware of the alleged crimes. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare has questioned Chakankar’s association with Kharat and raised concerns over continued support extended to him. The Maharashtra government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute to probe the case and identify other potential victims. Sensational information has come to light in the murder case that occurred two days ago in DJ Halli. The accused, Shabeel, who brutally murdered a minor girl out of suspicion, is missing, and the police search has intensified. Shabeel had called the minor girl to an abandoned house in DJ Halli. Subsequently, he stabbed the minor girl in her private parts. It has been revealed that he then slit the throat of the minor girl, who was writhing in extreme pain, murdering her. Two days after the incident, the accused Shabeel has not been found. The accused Shabeel is a resident of Bengaluru, while the murdered minor girl was a resident of Kolar. Their engagement had taken place in June. Recently, on the occasion of Ramadan, the minor girl had come to Bengaluru to stay with relatives. Meanwhile, the minor girl and Shabeel were meeting secretly. The two were meeting without the knowledge of their parents or family members. Although some people were aware that Shabeel and the minor girl were meeting at the abandoned house, they remained silent assuming they would get married. Shabeel, who was suspicious of the minor girl, met her two days ago. Shabeel instructed her to come to the abandoned house via phone. As usual, the minor girl went to the abandoned house in DJ Halli to meet Shabeel without anyone's knowledge. She left her mobile phone at home and went to meet Shabeel. Actor-dancer Nora Fatehi on Wednesday addressed the controversy surrounding her song Sarke Chunar from the upcoming film KD - The Devil. She said she doesn't understand the Kannada language, in which the original song, Sarse Ninna, is composed, and added that she was unaware of the song's Hindi version, Sarke Chunar. Nora, however, said that the moment she subsequently heard the song in its Hindi version – a language she understands – she told the director that the track would attract backlash. The song recently came under fire for its vulgar lyrics and choreography, with the Hindi version drawing sharp criticism online. The issue escalated to the point where the Information and Broadcasting Ministry assured in Parliament that a ban had been imposed on the track. Following the outrage, the makers removed the Hindi version from YouTube. Nora shared a video message on Wednesday, responding to the controversy. In the caption, she distanced herself from the disputed version of the song. “I would hate for anyone to think I endorse this. Thank you for the backlash, because of this pressure the filmmakers have luckily taken it down,” she wrote, while also urging fans to stop circulating the track online. “I’d also request everyone to stop sharing the song because you're just giving it a platform unnecessarily,” she added. At the same time, the actor called out personal attacks directed at her amid the controversy. “On a side note, I see some of you guys trying to use this as an opportunity to attack my character. It’s unfortunate,” she said. In a video shared on Instagram, Nora revealed that she filmed the song three years ago in Kannada and had agreed to be part of it as it featured Sanjay Dutt and was part of a major project. “I shot this song three years ago in a language called Kannada. I said yes because it was part of a big film. It was with a big icon, Sanjay Dutt—who would say no to working with him?” she said. She added that she relied on the filmmakers for translations at the time. “Nothing seemed inappropriate or vulgar when they were translating the song to me I don’t understand Kannada, so I was relying on what they told me.” The actor strongly distanced herself from the Hindi version, claiming she was neither informed nor consulted. “Whatever they’ve done right now—creating a Hindi version and dubbing the voice with those lyrics, which are very inappropriate—I had no idea about that. They didn’t take any approvals or permission from me,” she said. Nora also raised concerns about how the song was presented visually. She alleged that the makers released a lyrical video using “unflattering photos” without her consent and even created an AI-generated image of her and Dutt. “If anyone knows me, they know I have to approve all my photos they put this out without my approval,” she said, adding that she was “already feeling irritated” upon seeing the material at the launch event. Recalling the moment she saw the Hindi version, Nora said she immediately flagged concerns. “When they played the Hindi version, I knew it was a wrap. I knew we were going to have issues because at least I understand Hindi. I told the director, this is not going to be OK, this will get a lot of backlash,” she said. She further claimed that she had distanced herself from the project and chose not to promote it. “My image and reputation are on the line,” she added. Nora also used the opportunity to call out what she described as misplaced criticism directed solely at performers. Despite the controversy, Nora acknowledged that public pressure led to corrective action. The controversy began after the makers released the song in multiple languages, including in Hindi as Sarke Chunar. While the Kannada version did not initially draw the same level of scrutiny, the Hindi version was criticised for its suggestive lyrics and visuals. Several celebrities and organisations, including Armaan Malik, the All India Cine Workers Association, and the National Human Rights Commission, condemned the song. Lyricist Raqueeb Alam also stated that he had warned of potential censorship issues. Directed by Prem, KD - The Devil is slated for a theatrical release on April 30. Despite the ongoing controversy, the film remains on schedule.

A felicitation programme at a BJP office in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district descended into chaos on Wednesday after a woman stormed the venue, accused a party functionary of cheating her of lakhs, and assaulted him in front of party workers. The incident took place at the BJP office, where a programme had been organised to congratulate nominated councillors and party office-bearers. The event had barely begun when the woman entered the premises and confronted a party functionary over an alleged financial dispute. Eyewitnesses said she slapped the leader and attempted to drag him out by his collar, triggering panic at the venue. Dozens of people present rushed to intervene, but the situation quickly escalated into a heated confrontation. The woman alleged that she had handed over around Rs 4.5 lakh in the name of LIC deposits, but the accused never deposited the money and instead misappropriated it. She had been demanding the return of her money for a long time, and on Wednesday, she arrived at the event with her son. Both of them insisted on immediate repayment, even as party workers tried to calm the situation. The argument soon turned aggressive, with reports of scuffles, verbal abuse, and even slippers being used during the altercation. Police reached the spot after being alerted and managed to bring the situation under control. The woman and others involved in the dispute were escorted out of the BJP office, allowing the programme to resume after nearly an hour of disruption. Former district president and ex-candidate Sameer Tripathi said the clash erupted suddenly over a financial dispute. “During the felicitation of nominated councillors and mandal presidents, a arose over money transactions. Had we been informed earlier, the situation could have been avoided. Both belong to the BJP. Efforts will be made to resolve the matter soon,” he said. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media and is being widely circulated, showing the moment the woman confronted and assaulted the party functionary, while others struggled to control the situation.

In a significant breakthrough in the sensational daylight murder of  Charanpreet Singh, alias Chini Kubaheri, a property dealer, in Chandigarh Sector 9 on Wednesday afternoon, the Punjab Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has arrested both accused involved in the killing after an encounter in Kaithal, Haryana. Acting swiftly on intelligence inputs, AGTF teams tracked down the suspects to Kaithal. The accused have been identified as Rajan alias Piyush Pahalwan, a resident of Ferozepur, and Pritam Shah from Nawanshahr. Officials revealed that Rajan had recently entered India illegally via Nepal after returning from Malaysia. During the operation, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police in an attempt to escape. In retaliatory action, both suspects were injured and subsequently apprehended. The police have recovered the motorcycle used in the crime, which was fitted with a fake number plate, along with the weapons used in the crime. Both accused have a history of criminal involvement, with multiple cases registered against them. Investigators also confirmed that Charanpreet Singh himself had a criminal background, with several cases, including attempt to murder and violations under the Arms Act, registered against him in Mohali. Authorities are also probing his alleged links to gang networks and possible involvement in the drug trade. Further investigation is underway to establish the full conspiracy and identify any additional accomplices. Notably, 31-year-old Charanpreet Singh, alias Chini Kubaheri, was shot dead in a daring attack in Sector 9 market on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which took place around 12.30 pm, sent shockwaves across the city due to its location in a high-security zone, close to key government establishments. According to initial investigations and CCTV footage, the assailants had meticulously planned the attack. The helmet-clad shooters were waiting for Charanpreet outside a gym and opened fire as he exited the parking area in his SUV. As the vehicle slowed near a turn, the attackers fired nearly 12 rounds from both sides, leaving him critically injured. Despite the presence of heavy traffic and security infrastructure in the area, the attackers managed to flee the scene, reportedly driving against traffic towards the Landran side. Charanpreet sustained multiple bullet injuries to the chest, abdomen and arm and later succumbed to his injuries. Within hours of the incident, gangster Lucky Patial of the Davinder Bambiha gang claimed responsibility for the killing through a social media post. The murder is believed to be linked to ongoing gang rivalry, with allegations that the victim was acting as an informer for rival groups and had connections to previous criminal cases.

In a chilling sequence that unfolded in under a minute, a routine afternoon in Sector 9 turned into a crime scene - one that is now being seen as a stark warning of how organised gangs are tightening their grip on the city. Realtor Chamanpreet Singh alias Chini Kubaheri had just stepped out after a gym session and got into his SUV when he was ambushed. CCTV footage shows a gunman approaching the vehicle the moment it moved out of the parking lot. Within seconds, shots were fired through the passenger-side window. As Chamanpreet, already hit, tried to escape, the attacker ran around the SUV and fired repeatedly at point-blank range. The vehicle rolled forward briefly before coming to a stop the victim slumped inside. The brazen attack, carried out in the middle of a busy stretch near Madhya Marg, left bystanders stunned. Police later recovered a dozen empty cartridges from the spot, pointing to the sheer intensity of the assault. What has added a deeper layer to the case is the victim's recent complaint to police about an extortion threat. Chamanpreet had reportedly received a demand of Rs 50 lakh, allegedly linked to operatives of the Bambiha gang. Investigators are now examining whether the killing was a fallout of extortion, gang rivalry, or past criminal links. Hours after the murder, gangster Lucky Patial claimed responsibility through a social media post, alleging Chamanpreet was an "informant" against his group and warning that "action will be taken" against anyone sharing information with rivals. He also claimed the victim's involvement in the earlier killing of Gurvinder Singh alias Guri an undertrial shot 17 times outside the district administrative complex in Mohali earlier this year. Police have not yet verified these claims. The killing is not being seen in isolation. It is the fourth firing incident in Chandigarh in less than three months a pattern that police sources say reflects growing friction between rival gangs. In December 2025, Inderpreet Singh alias Parry was killed in Sector 26 in a case linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Weeks later, on January 16, bike-borne shooters opened fire outside a businessman's residence in Sector 21. A note left behind read, "With Love From Mohabbat Randhawa and Pawan Shaukeen," followed by a WhatsApp call allegedly demanding Rs 5 crore in extortion and claiming links to Bambiha gang aides. The latest shooting has triggered unease among residents and business groups, especially as it occurred in a high-footfall, central location. Voices across the city are now calling for stronger intelligence and visible policing. Concerns range from gangs entering the city to carry out targeted attacks, to the lack of deterrence despite repeated incidents. Former UT adviser Dharam Pal said the city, once considered low-crime, is now witnessing a surge in major incidents and stressed that police must step up vigilance and intelligence gathering, as earlier targeted crackdowns on drug-linked violence had proven effective. Echoing the sentiment, senior advocate Manmohan Lal Sarin said Chandigarh is "no longer as safe as before", with serious crimes occurring almost daily, including daylight murders in the heart of the city, and called for urgent action to restore control. Residents, too, are gripped by fear, with many saying the recent spate of killings and stabbings has sparked panic and raised concerns about a return to the "dark days" of violence, urging police to reassure citizens and assert control over criminals. Chandigarh Business Council chairman Neeraj Bajaj said such incidents have left people anxious and wary, while FOSWAC chairman Baljinder Singh Bittu went further, warning that the city risks turning into a "gangland", citing frequent shootings and questioning how criminals are entering so freely. Retired Army officer Col Gursewak Singh said residents no longer feel safe, especially at night, pointing to reports of youths roaming with weapons and a lack of police presence, and called for increased patrolling to restore public confidence. Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the attackers, who are believed to have fled towards Mohali. A motorcycle suspected to have been used in the crime has been recovered.

In a case that has shocked a small Gujarat village, a woman allegedly spiked her husband’s food with sleeping pills before her lover killed him with an axe, police said. The gruesome murder took place in Karbun village in Banaskantha district, where the victim, Ranchhodji Darbar, lived with his wife Dharmiba. Investigators said the murder was planned after Darbar discovered that his wife was having an affair with Bhanabhai Majirana, who also lived in the same village. The accused woman, her alleged lover Majirana and her sister Anandaba have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, police said. According to police, the trio conspired to eliminate Darbar. On the night of the crime, Dharmiba allegedly laced her husband’s dinner with sleeping pills. After he fell unconscious, Majirana attacked him with an axe, killing him on the spot. Anandaba is accused of assisting in the crime. Police said the accused then tried to conceal the murder. When attempts to dispose of or preserve the body failed, they placed it back on the bed to make the death appear natural. “The case has been solved and all three accused have been arrested,” a police official said, adding that the motive was linked to the illicit relationship and the husband’s opposition to it. A case has been registered on charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, and abetment. Further investigation is on.

Less than 24 hours after shots were fired inside Panjab University, a realtor was gunned down in the heart of Chandigarh around noon on Wednesday. Hundreds of commuters were driving down the arterial Madhya Marg, and scores were milling about in Sector 9, famous for offices, eateries and gyms, when a gunman riddled Chamanpreet Singh alias Chini Kubaheri with a dozen bullets as he sat in his Toyota Fortuner in a parking lot. Only a few days ago, he had informed police about an extortion call from Bambiha gang for Rs 50 lakh and death threats. Chamanpreet, 31, was also locked in a property dispute say police, adding that he faced five FIR's, including one for attempted murder. The motive for his killing is unclear. The gunman and his getaway partner were yet to be identified or arrested at the time of filing this report. Gangster Lucky Patial took responsibility for the killing in a social media post but police are yet to confirm it. Chamanpreet was leaving after a workout at a popular gym in Sector 9 when he was attacked. A 20-second CCTV footage shows him easing his black Fortuner into a parking space when his body suddenly starts jerking as bullets slam into him from the passenger-side window. A man wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet and clad in a red T-shirt is seen shooting at Chamanpreet. Mortally wounded, he struggles to open the driver side door and tries to get out, but the gunman runs around to face him and shoots him seven more times at point-blank range. Chamanpreet slumps over on the steering wheel. His foot seems to be on the gas peal as the SUV hurtles ahead in the final seconds of the video. Witnesses told police that the gunman hopped on a motorcycle and drove off with another man. The murder happened in full public view and within earshot of hundreds of commuters. Two media reporters were passing by the same spot when they heard the staccato gunfire. A crowd gathered around the SUV and grisly pictures of the victim were swirling around on social media within minutes. Chamanpreet's friends and some other persons took him to PGI in the blood-splattered SUV, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Around 10-11 bullets had struck his chest and abdomen. Chandigarh, rattled by the shooting at PU in which sheer luck prevented casualties, is left shaken by the murder. Cops from Sector 3, 11, 17 police stations and teams of crime branch, operation cell, and District Crime Cell (DCC) rushed to the spot with a forensics team and cordoned off the area. SP-city K M Priyanka took charge of the investigation on scene. Police collected 12 shell casings and two intact bullets. Sector 3 police station has registered a case against unknown persons. Sources said the duo sped towards Landran in Mohali, and police teams were in pursuit. Chamanpreet was a resident of Kubaheri in Mullanpur. According to sources, he recently received an extortion call from Prince Chauhan, a Bambiha gang member. Gangster Lucky Patial's social media post, where he claimed responsibility for the murder, said: "He was an informant against our group. Understand this now, if our brothers' information is given to enemies, we will take action. He was involved in the murder of Gurvinder in Mohali as well." Gurvinder Singh alias Guri, an undertrial in a drugs case, was shot 17 times as he got into his car outside the District Administrative Complex in Mohali on Jan 28, 2026. Chamanpreet's murder is the fourth shooting in the city in just three months this year, and follows the Dec 1, 2025, murder of Inderpreet Singh alias Parry, in Sector 26. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang had claimed responsibility for Parry's killing. On Jan 16, 2026, bike-borne shooters fired five rounds outside a businessman's bungalow in Sector 21, UT, at midnight. Police said that the same day, a 32-second call came on the businessman's mobile from a foreign WhatsApp number. The caller, identifying himself as an aide of Doni Bal, Kaushal Chaudhary and the Bambiha gang, allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore. That night, two bikers fired gunshots at a pharmacy in Sector 32.

"Cement aur drum" (cement and drum) - these three words on his wife's mobile phone scared a man so much that he allowed his partner to leave with her lover. This is the story of Rajkumar from Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, who parted ways with his wife to save his own life. According to Rajkumar, his wife was having an affair and would often argue with him before leaving to be with her lover. In July last year, his partner left him and their six-month-old child to live with her parents. In reality, she had been staying with her lover for a month, Rajkumar claimed. "Every time I tried to confront her, she asked for evidence," Rajkumar said. Recently, while his wife was on a call, allegedly with her lover, Rajkumar snatched her phone and used it as an opportunity to unearth the truth. Upon checking the phone, Rajkumar found some nude photos, murder stories shared on Facebook with the caption "cement aur drum" (cement and drum) and allegedly a picture of himself with the text "neela drum aur cement" (blue drum and cement). Rajkumar interpreted this as a hidden message regarding a plot to kill him. The mention of "blue drum and cement" reminds one of the March 2025 murder case when a woman, Muskan Rastogi, along with her lover, Sahil Shukla, killed her husband, Saurabh Rajput. Together they chopped Saurabh's body into 15 pieces and put inside a sealed, cement-filled blue drum at his house in Meerut's Brahmpuri locality. During arguments, his wife would allegedly threaten him to pack him in blue drum. "She would often threaten to kill me. After I took away her phone, she said she would kill all four of us (me and my brothers)," Rajkumar said, sharing his ordeal and added, "She would neither cook for me nor clean my clothes. She would throw away our child's soiled clothes. When asked whom she wanted to live with, she chose her lover." Rajkumar lodged a complaint with the police. During the mediation process, his wife made it clear that she wanted to live with her lover instead. He then asked to meet her lover and decided to let her go.

Gunshots rang out on Panjab University campus on Tuesday evening as two masked men targeted Jashandeep Singh Jawanda, a key functionary of the Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU). Two shots were fired at Jawanda, but he escaped unhurt, police said. Panic ensued among those present -the university is particularly crowded these days as Jhankaar Fest is on, and Tuesday's show included a 'star night' concert by Satinder Sartaaj. The gunmen spread panic in nearby areas as well while attempting to flee, pointing a gun at a temple priest and robbing an Enfield motorcycle from a couple at gunpoint, on which they sped away. The university cancelled the star night and put the fest on hold. Police remained on campus till late night, gathering forensic evidence, examining CCTV footage, and speaking with witnesses. The motive for the attack is not yet clear, police said. The campus was filling up with students, visitors and journalists for the fest a calendar event - when the two gunmen arrived on a scooter around 5.45pm. Jawanda was standing in the parking lot near the botany department and did not appear to notice the two men approaching him. One of them suddenly pulled out a pistol from his bag and fired two shots at Jawanda. Both missed. While Jawanda fled for his life, the two assailants jumped back onto their scooter and sped off. They may have been confused or unaware of the university's layout and ended up at the rear of the Radha Krishan temple on campus, with no way to exit. Desperate to find an escape route, they dumped the scooter and sprinted into the temple, but the priest stopped them for not removing their shoes. Furious, they pulled a gun on him and threatened to shoot him before running out again. At a nearby private school, they waylaid a couple at gunpoint, grabbed their motorcycle and sped off. The owner of the Enfield first informed the police control room. It was only when a police team arrived that they learned of the shooting on campus. DSP (Central Division) Dalbir Singh Bhinder, Sector 11 SHO Japal Singh Bhullar and crime branch officers rushed to the scene, along with forensic teams. After examining CCTV footage, police suspect there may have been four suspects. Police seized the scooter and found fake number plates. "Two gunshots were fired and nobody was hurt," Bhinder said. Jawanda's phone is switched off, and a police team has been sent to his home to check on him, an officer said. This comes almost exactly a year after a PU student, Aditya Thakur, was stabbed to death at a fest concert. Three students were injured in that assault. The last time a shooting took place at PU was in April 2016, when three students were injured.

A man accused of killing a 4-year-old girl in the Nandgram area here was arrested after an encounter in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said. The post-mortem report of the girl is awaited, with doctors observing multiple pellet wounds suspected to be from a 12-bore firearm, the ACP added. According to officials, Nandgram police station received information at around 9 pm on Monday about a child lying injured in a field, who was taken to a nearby hospital by her parents, where she succumbed to her injuries. The child's family informed the police that their neighbour, Prajapati, had taken the child away with him on Monday evening under the pretext of buying her toffees, after which she did not return. Acting on the family's statement, the police had detained Prajapati, who, during the interrogation, allegedly confessed to the crime, they added. According to the police, during the recovery operation, Prajapati allegedly opened fire at the police team with the firearm, which he had concealed behind bushes after committing the crime, they said. After police retaliated in self-defence, Prajapati sustained bullet injuries in both legs, following which he was admitted to a hospital, the officials said. A violent clash triggered by a dispute over temple donations in Chanasma taluka has snowballed into a major controversy after visuals showed police personnel retreating from the spot, allowing an armed mob to run amok. The incident took place on the night of March 15, when around 15–20 men arrived in multiple vehicles and stormed a farmhouse belonging to Bhavesh Desai. Armed with swords, sticks, and other sharp weapons, the group vandalised the property, issued threats, and created panic in the area. CCTV footage of the attack, now widely circulated, shows the mob damaging gates and ransacking the premises. Names of alleged accused, including Jitubha, Jahubha, Dalpuji, and prime suspect Jahu Shankar Thakor, have surfaced during the investigation. What has drawn widespread criticism is the conduct of the police. Two police vans were reportedly present at the scene but left as the situation escalated, allowing the mob to continue unchecked. The attackers even allegedly damaged a police vehicle before dispersing. The footage triggered public outrage, shifting focus from the attackers to the role of law enforcement. Under mounting pressure, Gujarat Police launched a crackdown, forming multiple teams and conducting raids that led to the arrest of 18 accused. Two FIRs were registered—one based on the complaint of Bhavesh Desai and another regarding damage to a police vehicle. In a controversial turn, the arrested men were paraded through the streets from the Chanasma police station to the bus stand with ropes tied around their hands. Eyewitnesses said the accused were made to perform sit-ups and were beaten with sticks as they pleaded for forgiveness. The police also took the accused back to the farmhouse to recreate the crime scene before producing them in a court in Patan, which remanded them to police custody till March 23. Following the backlash, the Patan Superintendent of Police suspended three officers and five personnel from the Chanasma police station, including Police Inspector R H Solanki, ASI Haresh Arjanbhai, and head constable Sanjay Mohanlal. Additionally, five GRD personnel were removed from service. Investigators are now working to trace the weapons and vehicles used in the attack, even as the incident raises serious concerns over both mob violence and police conduct.

A 32-year-old police constable allegedly died by suicide at the Kalina Police Headquarters in Mumbai. The man, identified as Bhaiyasaheb Bhimrao Wavale, was a native of Parbhani and had joined the Mumbai Police Force as a driver on February 7, 2026. According to officials, Wavale was found dead on March 15 at the Kalina Training Centre. Police recovered a suicide note from the site, and his father has confirmed that the handwriting belongs to his son. Based on the suicide note and a complaint filed by Wavale's father, it was revealed that the constable was in a romantic relationship with a woman from Nanded. The note alleges that the woman's parents strongly opposed the relationship and were consistently pressuring him to end it. The note further claims that the girlfriend's family threatened Wavale, telling him to either take his own life or face suspension from the police force. The woman's family intended to arrange her marriage elsewhere and allegedly subjected Wavale to continuous harassment. Following the complaint from the constable's father, the Vakola Police have registered a case against the girlfriend's parents. The suicide note has been taken into custody as evidence. Police officials said that they are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the death to determine the extent of the alleged harassment.
