Shia mark it with black flags, loud chants, and synchronized chest-beating (matam), where men rhythmically pound their own chests, sometimes with chains, to relive the grief. We didn't grow this here. We imported it by bringing in millions from third-world Muslim countries where public self-beating and street takeovers are normal.
