Interesting thought. It is possible to win a state championship in track with 1 person… it’s been done. So if a school wins a state championship with 1 athlete scoring all the points, is that athlete not bigger than the team? (Cambridge) Definition of coach - someone whose job is to teach people to improve at a sport, skill, or school subject:

🗣️HS coaches, it’s time to move on from an old saying because YES, you do have athletes that are BIGGER than the team!! You know the NFL guy they put the franchise tag on forcing them to stay on the team? They are bigger than the team. You know that college FB or BB player that the fans yell “One more year!”? They are bigger than the team. It’s rare, but it occurs on every level so it occurs in HS as well. Now of course you don’t want an athlete, or parent, to ACT like it. Doesn’t mean you take them for granted when they don’t act like it. SHOW them you acknowledge their value. Treating everyone equally is not treating everyone fairly. It assumes everyone’s needs are the same. Strong leaders are unique because they provide clear vision/expectations/goals, while treating each individual fairly, in order to establish a high performing culture. That’s hard to do but it’s a skill worth developing 🫡 Good luck in your journey!
