🍻 YOOOOO, we need to tap into the majestic hive mind of the #2000trees family.
🍻 We're concocting a special somethin' with our buds at Arbor Ales (yes, they're BACK for 2025) and we need a name. Not just any name: the BEST name.

Does anyone know how you speak to @cineworld to resolve a technical issue on site. @cineworld could be helpful if you had some support staff somewhere to help with your broken platform?

@greateranglia 7.49 to Lpool Street from Ware (actually going Stratford due to the Hackney works) - The announcements on train said it was going Lpool and driver didn't announce /warn anyone to get off at Cheshunt as needed. Poor show and lazy for anyone who wasn't aware of the changes

@YoungbloodJoe Have also seen fully external attempts at this. For example linking at mass scale from spammy sites to broken URLs. Example is they leave a full stop at end of every URL.
Even if doesn't cause negative impact to performance, it's a pain for your GSC reports.

@greateranglia Any assumption if services will resume after you've moved the tree?

@brodieseo It's a really good point making sure not to forget about your 'most powerful page'. The setup for Wise works well and things can easily get messy when relying on redirects.
Also good to simply check your data... Are people from different countries landing where you expected?

Does your site operate internationally? This is a common issue I come across with hreflang.
While most large sites I work with tend to have the basics in place (using correct language/country/region targeting), there is often a missed opportunity.
The missed opportunity relates to how the primary region is being targeted on the site, which is often lost and confused as sites expand internationally.
What is the mistake?
What sites tend to do is start with a domain like example.com and decide that they want to target users in specific countries/regions with content written in one language (such as English).
The issue then comes about when the Root Domain homepage is no longer used. This would mean that URLs such as example.com/us and example.com/uk might come into play.
While example.com/us is fine for US sub-pages, if US was the core region for the business, example.com should remain as the US homepage, not example.com/us. US sub-pages could then be example.com/us/page, but example.com should really be the homepage that is indexed by Google, without example.com having to redirect to example.com/us.
The issue with this approach is that a lot of sites will naturally link to example.com when referencing the name of the site. This effectively means that this page is the strongest in terms of link equity, which would unlikely to be as effective for the site if a temporary redirect were to be put in place through to example.com/us.
Do you have an example?
It's a minor alteration to the approach that can build a stronger foundation for sites if you get it right from the start. Wise has quite an intricate approach to hreflang and international SEO in general that I would recommend taking a look at.
With the approach used by Wise, they are effectively doubling down on the UK as their primary region. While the URL: wise.com/gb does in fact exist, you can see that a canonical is used to specify that wise.com is the primary URL on Google, with there not being a need to put a redirect in place.
Note: some sites like to use the Root Domain as the fallback, but not apply it to any region. This is again an approach that I wouldn't advise using, as you're effectively putting much of the ranking power behind the domain to be focused on "everything else", which often excludes the most competitive markets.
Final thoughts
As Google has mentioned in the past, hreflang can be one of the most challenging areas of SEO, and for good reason. While there are many tidbits to keep in mind with an approach like this, just don't forget about the Root Domain homepage in the process.
This goes beyond the technical aspects, and might be obvious to some, but if all of your content is in the same language and you're trying to expand to different countries/regions, make sure to be careful with this approach.
Ensuring Google considers each page variant is unique/useful to that region is key – there are many issues that can come as a result of not being meticulous about how this is handled.
