I think we are not really talking about the impacts of this “3-week mid-semester break” on events to be held on campus. Everybody just dey postpone. Omo!

Following the protest at Obafemi Awolowo University, students have raised concerns about the leadership of Students’ Union President David Adelani. Criticisms include communication gaps, the president’s 'invisibility', and insufficient responsiveness to students’ concerns. Adelani acknowledged the need to improve communication and outlined steps his administration has taken to address student welfare. Before the implementation of the policy that triggered the transport crisis, Campus Reporter had published a report predicting that the proposed system would be inefficient. However, @OAUniversity did not take students’ concerns seriously until protests disrupted academic activities. This reflects a poor approach to student welfare and policy implementation. @OAUniversity has suspended academic activities.📢 It also declared an immediate three-week mid-semester break following student protests over transportation and other welfare concerns.✊🏾 While the university described the protest as unruly, the students’ union insists it was peaceful and that the decision to shut down the institution was disproportionate and punitive. This makes it painfully clear that the Obafemi Awolowo University management has little to no compassion for its students, choosing displacement over dialogue. One would expect a university to listen and lead not sidestep responsibility at the expense of its own students.
Great IFE@TheGreatestIFE

PRESS STATEMENT: OAU STUDENTS TO GO ON THREE WEEKS MID - SEMESTER BREAK The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, wishes to inform parents, guardians, alumni, and the general public that following recent developments on campus, the Senate of the University has approved that the students proceed on a mid - semester break for a period of three (3) weeks, with immediate effect. A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that this decision became necessary after a series of protests by students over the newly introduced transportation system escalated into unruly conduct, including the obstruction of major access roads and harassment of other road users. Despite efforts to engage and appeal for calm, the situation has continued to pose concerns for the safety and well-being of members of the University community in particular and the public in general. Consequently, and in the interest of restoring order, ensuring safety and creating an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue, Senate has directed the University Management to ask all students to proceed on a two-week break with immediate effect. During this period, the University Management will continue to engage relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised and to ensure that normalcy is restored on campus. Accordingly, parents and guardians are kindly advised to take note of this development and make the necessary arrangements for their children and wards. Students are enjoined to remain law-abiding and use this period responsibly. The University remains committed to the welfare of its students and to maintaining a peaceful and conducive academic environment for all. Further updates will be communicated as appropriate.

Transport crisis, e-portal challenges, and mid-semester hostel renovations. These are some of the issues that pushed OAU students to take to the streets earlier today ✊🏾. The protest appears to be gaining momentum, with the university management now convening an emergency senate meeting, after previously overlooking actions like the students’ 72-hour lecture boycott. Students have also insisted that tangible action must be taken before normal activities can resume ⚠️. Read more: campusreporter.africa/oau-students-p… #OAU #StudentsWelfare #CampusReporter
