For over 100 days now since December, 2025 that HEAL teams have been on the ground every single day, patrolling poaching hotspots across central West Bengal to protect bogari birds during this critical migratory period.

Our team acted immediately. Each net was carefully dismantled. The trapped birds were gently untangled, with the nets cut away to avoid injury, and both were safely released back into the wild.

On 30 March 2026, our field team reached Eroali in Khargram, Murshidabad, and discovered 13 mist nets set up to trap migratory birds. Overhead, thousands of pipits and larks filled the sky unaware of the danger below. Two had already been caught.

Just when we think poachers might finally allow migratory birds to return home in peace, we find more illegal mist nets laid out across open fields.

This March, the HEAL field team assisted the West Bengal Forest Department in two separate wild gaur rescue operations in Cooch Behar, ensuring the animals were safely secured and prepared for release back into suitable forest habitat. #wildliferescue #westbengal #wildgaur

Between 4–7 PM, our teams spread out and acted swiftly: • Ayra – 900 m of nets dismantled, 4 birds rescued • Ishira – 1.1 km of nets dismantled, 6 birds rescued • Ghoshgram – 500 m of nets dismantled, 3 birds rescued

Field Update | Deterring Bird Poachers in Central West Bengal 12 March our team recovered 4 sets of mist nets stretching nearly 1.5 km. 17 March we carried out a coordinated patrol across multiple poaching hotspots—across Birbhum and Murshidabad districts.

It’s encouraging to see the students ask questions about migration, where these birds come from, why they are caught. When they learn that birds flying 1000s of km from distant countries are being trapped in their own surroundings, it changes how they see their landscape.

The HEAL field team is spending long hours across the wetlands and fields of central West Bengal right now. It is a time when thousands of migratory birds fly over the fields of central West Bengal and get trapped to be sold as meat.
