We legislate safe (or unsafe) work hours for kids but feel we can't do the same for school hours. Sad.

There is no doubt starting school later would significantly benefit health & wellbeing of NJ students, especially middle and high schoolers.
Still, whenever a later start time is proposed there is significant pushback from parents

The alarms on A’Nya Lucas’ phone go off at 5, 5:15, 5:20 and 5:30am so she can get out the door by 6:08. The time between her first alarm and her first period class (7:45am) is nearly 3 hours. She won’t get back home until 6 or 7pm. #startschoollater thebaltimorebanner.com/education/k-12…

@Holden_Culotta This is low-hanging fruit for anyone who cares about teen mental health, safety & well-being. Schools used to start at sane, humane hours that gave students a chance for healthy sleep. Let's make it happen again! #startschoollater #sleepmatters

@Holden_Culotta Yesterday I learned of a school district that starts its bus runs at 4:52 am!
It doesn't matter how early a teen "goes to bed" with hours like that.
But many families are required by law to deprive their children of sleep to send them to school. #startschoollater

English

@SheepvWolf @Holden_Culotta You'd think so, but experience shows otherwise! When schools start later, kids go to bed at around the same time (LATE!) but sleep more in the morning. Result? More sleep! startschoollater.net/myths-and-misc…
English

@Holden_Culotta I'm a couple of decades from high school, what is considered early. I usually got the school bus at 5:30p. Could also say the issue is kids staying up late the night before, between homework, sports, clubs, etc. Some don't go to bed until after 11...

MAHA sleep specialist Jeffrey Rose: Early high school start times turn kids into “zombies”
“There’s no greater reform you could make for high school education” than later start times.
“You get less sickness because people are showing up with strong immune systems, less absenteeism, less car accidents, better sports outcomes, better grades.”
“Everything is performed much better.”
“With the exception of Dr. Oz, I haven't heard too many people talking about sleep … I have talked to RFK Jr. about that, and he's listening to that.”
“It doesn't matter how good the schools are or the teachers or the reputation. Kids are exhausted in school.”
@RFKandJR @StartSchoolL8r
English

@Holden_Culotta @PamMurrayCT It's also just plain false. A myth disproven again and again by the many districts that have found ways to start at reasonable times #startschoollater startschoollater.net/myths-and-misc…
English

@PamMurrayCT I know. That’s a stupid reason to ruin our kids’ health. Sports times can change too
