At the Lab, we’ve been keeping an eye on a dynamic that is emerging in some low- and middle-income countries in the Indo-Pacific: the interaction between geostrategic competition and fragility. Geostrategic competition, and the risks of great-power conflict, dominate policymaker attention. But complex fragility within regional states is an equally important – but overlooked – dynamic of Australia’s strategic context, with similarly significant potential to impact its interests. New analysis from the Lab’s @heathermurphy, @bridirice and Martina Zapf finds that geostrategic competition and fragility are profoundly interlinked. By addressing the root causes of fragility Australia can also turn down the temperature of the strategic contest. NEW ANALYSIS: Geostrategic competition is a defining feature of strategic dynamics in the Indo-Pacific and a key shaper of Australia’s international affairs policy. This competition - between the US, its allies and partners, and China - is particularly active in domains that impact the economic and social development of low- and middle-income countries in our region. This has big implications for Australia’s development program, and its broader statecraft. The Lab’s @heathermurphy, @bridirice and Martina Zapf consider the costs of this contest, both in terms of the pursuit of development outcomes and the achievement of strategic objectives in the Lab’s new brief: How geostrategic competition and fragility interact. In it, they offer up some options for Australia and its partners for bolstering resilience in the region to ameliorate the more corrosive effects of geostrategic competition.
