A quick update: The surgery to remove my left arm was successful with hopes of an eventual prosthetic replacement. Similarly, the femur and patella surgeries were also successful and the fantastic surgery team was able to save my left leg.  To best focus on my healing and recovery, I’m stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN. Thank you to all for the prayers and thoughts; please keep them coming.

It is about PEOPLE: Relationships are the foundation of every winning culture. 🧱 Because a player who feels truly seen, known and valued will go further than one who simply feels coached. 📡 And you have to be yourself because players can sense what is real and what is fake. You cannot build a genuine relationship with someone unless they see the real you and believe that the real you genuinely cares about them. The temptation for every coach is to tell players what they want to hear so they will like you, rather than telling them what they need to hear because you are afraid they might not. The best coaches are willing to risk being disliked in the moment to help a player become better in the future. They do not lead for approval. They lead from a place of deep care. ❤️ They are willing to put their reputation at risk, have uncomfortable conversations and reject the label of a “players’ coach” if that is what it takes to get the best out of the people they are responsible for leading. Sports may be a competitive entertainment business, but every business will always come down to the people you are building with. Worry less about the play you are running and more about your true purpose as a leader: 🫗 Pouring into the people entrusted to you.
