Our Foundation was delighted to co-host international human rights champion Kenneth Roth for a bracing discussion on how countries like New Zealand can meaningfully advance human rights during a period of global backsliding. @HelenClarkNZ and Ken's conversation was thoughtfully moderated by AUT - Auckland University of Technology's Vice Chancellor Professor Damon Salesa, and attended by over 200 engaged Aucklanders. The conversation will shortly be available as a webinar on the Foundation and AUT's websites

Our report with @WspNz, Premiums under Pressure, covered these questions and suggested a raft of policy solutions to help prepare use for climate change and insurance retreat. We need comprehensive, fair, and predictable solutions to the problems we know are on the way. @HelenClarkNZ

Our public earthquake insurance is world leading and has allowed the country to continue to prosper despite some major earthquake events. Can we be brave enough to do something similar in the face of climate change?

In California and Florida there are already significant numbers of houses that are uninsurable thanks to increasing climate hazards in those states. Many homeowners have found themselves forced to keep living in dangerous locations because their houses have become worthless, and they cannot afford to buy elsewhere. Can we all agree this is not a future we would like to see for homeowners in this country?

Thanks in large part to climate change, home insurance is going up at a rate far faster than other consumer products, and many homeowners are starting to feel the pinch. Some homes are now uninsurable, and more will follow, leaving homeowners with an asset that is essentially worthless because it cannot be sold.
