@HellerInTheory

Professor of theoretical physics @UGent and visiting professor @JagiellonskiUni. Chasing good questions and out of the box ideas. Opinions my own.

Today on the arXiv: arxiv.org/abs/2511.11555 by @ugent and @cuhksz researchers. In this theoretical physics work we re-examined how high energy physics systems approach equilibrium and revealed a unifying mathematical structure despite variety of systems we considered. Why bother?

This plot from the paper shows both weak (vertical zigzag line) and strong (black x's) coupling equilibration mechanisms together as incorporated by our hybrid model.

We believe this is not the last word stemming from our idea. From a broader physics perspective, fluid mechanism is an example of an effective field theory and our approach looks very relevant also for the initial value problem in e.g. modification of general relativity.

Fantastic news: our proposal for a Centre of Excellence in neutron-star physics was approved by the Research Council of Finland. 🤩 Exciting times ahead with @joonas_nattila et al, including new short- and long- term positions in Helsinki and beyond! helsinki.fi/en/news/univer…

New paper from @ugent: in arxiv.org/abs/2510.13986 we show for the first time how to define a top-down notion of holographic complexity in an expanding universe using double-scaled SYK. Quite surprising, the notion arises from temporal rather than spatial volumes of the universe.

@ThomasVanRiet2 Lack of problem solving is indeed a big issue in teaching STEM. Listening to pretty stories will not take students to the next, research level. Good to hear you will have both @ThomasVanRiet2 !

The UK has a fine tradition of organizing summer schools for PhD. students in theoretical physics with proper attention to tutorials. So, I am happy and honored to be lecturing at BUSSTEP, spreading the String/Swampland gospel. indico.global/event/14222/ov… 1/2

@HellerInTheory Looks interesting! Naive question: holography apart, what do we understand of the physical significance of timelike entanglement entropy? Like roughly EE is a measure of how correlated two subsystems are, is there a similar understanding for timelike EE?

Super happy to share arxiv.org/abs/2507.17847 that appeared online today. In this work we study of what it takes to generalize venerable entanglement entropy to subregions that extend in time. The well-known mathematical trick is known as an analytic continuation.
