SDCC plans to remove the centre line, introduce an advisory cycle lane, and add a footpath — all without widening the existing road. #RoadSafety

The speed of this vehicle on Killakee Road highlights the existing safety issues on what the Council acknowledges is a “substandard rural road network.” Despite this, they propose increasing traffic volumes by 300k visitors p.a. for a €35m coffee shop! #RoadSafety #traffic

Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) preying on River Lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) on the River Mulkear at Annacotty Weir, Co. Limerick. The presence of this weir blocks upstream lamprey migration, resulting in increased vulnerability to predation at this location.
Predation has a major impact on lampreys trapped below the weir. However, the underlying problem here is the weir, not native natural predators.
The surviving lampreys will begin spawning soon, after months of unsuccessfully attempting to migrate upstream past this barrier. Preventing lampreys from reaching optimal upstream spawning and nursery habitats reduces the overall population size and makes the population highly vulnerable.
Annacotty Weir is not unique in causing fish passage problems. There are weirs blocking lamprey migration in the lower reaches of most rivers in Ireland.
