I currently research Christian origins within the political and social context of the Roman world, with a focus on power, elite family networks, and historical method. My work and writing can be found here: henryhdavis.com

A useful discussion. But historians need to answer the public’s question in simple terms: Why should we care? That means explaining why ancient history matters to people outside universities, not just why it matters inside them.

Is ancient history essential...or becoming obsolete? New #podcast on the challenges facing the study of the ancient world w/ leading scholars who don’t all agree... but all believe the stakes are high @barrystrauss @drangiehobbs @WalterScheidel : youtube.com/watch?v=tab5zB…

Very pleased to report that I've just signed a contract with @routledgebooks to write a volume on The Roman Empire, AD 68-192 for the Routledge History of the Ancient World, part-replacing Martin Goodman's The Roman World. Big shoes to fill.

If you vote Reform you will not have an illegal migrant deportation facility in your area. We will hold migrants awaiting deportation in constituencies that vote Green instead. You get what you vote for.

There’s been a lot of talk about power, privilege, and entitlement lately. Ancient Rome had plenty of all three. I wrote about Augustus, family networks, and how power really worked here: henryhdavis.com/post/ronald-sy…

@ClassicalWisdom Augustus. I’d like to ask him when “restoring the Republic” became monarchy with better branding.

Just back from Glastonbury Medieval Fayre. It reminded me of Mary Beard's Egyptian bread, which sparked her love of ancient history. People enjoy seeing, handling, smelling, and feeling it. There is no reason this could not be done with ancient history too.

An interesting podcast, and quite revealing: Perry gives clear reasons why Classics leaves him cold, Latin at school, copied buildings, and people using it to talk about “civilisation.” Debates about Classics’ relevance should start by asking people what they actually think.
mary beard@wmarybeard

What does Grayson Perry think of classical civilisation? He’s not a fan is the short answer! Charlotte and I discuss this with him and argue back on this week’s Instant Classics podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ins…

@NewYorker ‘Realistic detail’ isn’t evidence. Ancient writers could make fictional letters sound ‘real’ (see Patricia Rosenmeyer, cited by Livesey). ‘Predictions’ were often written after the fact. So not much help for dating. Livesey’s point is about dating, not just ‘Paul’.

New scholarship reconsiders the apostle St. Paul, who turned a Jewish sect into a world religion—and whose legacy remains contested two millennia later. newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

@HistoryToday A small correction: AD 65 is when Seneca died, not when he was born. His birth is usually dated to around 4 BCE.

Why Gladiator is brilliant but it's sequel sucks, some near 4,000-year-old bread and even a nod to @GoodwinMJ. Always a huge pleasure talking to @wmarybeard for Sunday @Daily_Express today. Mary's ace new book, Talking Classics, out now via @ProfileEditions. Link in replies

@rioghbhardain I’m not sure it’s decline so much as a loss of the position Classics once had. Now has to explain itself, and hasn’t fully adjusted. When it’s presented openly, showing how the evidence works (e.g Mary Beard) it connects. The gap is more about presentation than subject.

The study of Classics at most universities appears to have gone to the dogs. The very last subject in the humanities I would have expected to deteriorate in this way.

@GeorgyKantor @benjcartlidge @AntigoneJournal I suspect the divide here is really methodological. If you read Juvenal as a constructed literary persona rather than a straightforward voice, Highet becomes more useful than his reputation sometimes suggests.

@benjcartlidge @AntigoneJournal Indeed. And, let's face it, all the historical parts in Juvenal the Satirist were made obsolete by a couple of appendices in Syme's Tacitus just three years later.

@wmarybeard The line about supporting “outsiders” in Classics stands out. It says a great deal about her—and about the field.

@JosephAPWilson1 That broader question can be discussed separately. The point here is what this type of evidence can and cannot establish.

@HenryDavisCC Yes. The mere existence of a first century rabbi is supported by more than just that.
