Asked Bubba Wallace about what he's noticed in Riley Herbst given how well he and the 35 team are running lately. Bubba had a lot of really good things to say. "Riley's an incredible human being. A lot of fun to be around, through the good times, through the bad times." Bubba commended Riley's mindset and calm demeanor, as well as how he's taken to constructive criticism and building on all the lessons he learned last year in what was a frustrating rookie year. "He shows up every day with a smile on his face, ready to learn, ready to work and figure it the hell out. And I appreciate that about him so much, when somebody like him could go do whatever the hell he wants. "He wants to be driving racecars, he wants to continue to better his craft, and I've got nothing but respect for him." Plus a bit about how the 35 team upping their performance helps the 23 and 45 teams at 23XI.

Here is my solution. Pitch a shift in focus for the OEMs. You’d be hard pressed to find many people who want to buy a Chevrolet Trax because they saw one in a NASCAR race. People that buy crossovers aren’t necessarily caring much about what drivers race on the weekend. They know that’s not the car they would be buying. What people will do is be brand loyal. F1 has this. People are Mercedes fans. Ferrari fans. McLaren fans. Why have we not leaned into this? There is already a natural inclination to go this route. Just let them compete for the fans favor. Produce the best racecars you can and let the fans be fans. If I’m a Chevy fan, I’m gonna go buy a Chevy (or other GM model). Same with Toyota. Same with Ford or whatever OEM. Having individual models doesn’t mean much anymore. Fans (generally) aren’t idiots. They understand that what makes a great race car doesn’t equal a great road car. We don’t need to have random techs that will have little to no impact to the actual street cars. Promote brand pride, not individual model pride. That’s my solution.

I’ve called the OReily series “Classic stock car racing” for years now but it does expose an issue for all racing series currently. Unlike other sports, motorsports is requested to entirely change its product every few years to satisfy OEMs and technological changes. The question is: Do you continue to change with them, or prepare a platform that can survive in an OEM-less future? Is that 10 years away? 20 years? Sprint cars, dirt late models etc are essentially this. Are they relevant technologically? No. Do they have a dedicated fan base? Yes. Then there’s the issue that the current car has a dwindling supply of parts and the manufacturers of those parts are disappearing. Thus I don’t envy NASCARs situation here. Invest in keeping things as they are by becoming involved in the parts and pieces that are relevant no where else? Or change with the whims of consumer preference for OEM support? Risking the very product your customers love. It’s a really tough spot. My heart says, just stay as is. Let the cup series change but keep one for your hardcore fan base. But I’m not staring at the spreadsheet data.

That is easily disproven if we analyze the data, especially if look cars like the No. 6 or No. 3 which has made even bigger gains than the No. 35 since last fall at Kansas. Herbst was decent there last fall and got a bit better. There is no conspiracy.
