Melanie Griffith shocked everyone with her performance in Working Girl because she was a lightweight performer but Nichols used her quirks and limited acting abilities to advantage to make her the average girl underdog you root for. WG is the gold standard in how you make a smart rom -com that’s both classy and accessible to a wide audience, starting with an original script and giving established actors roles against type.

I hope Cinema can recapture some of the classic rom-coms we were spoiled with back in the ‘80s, ‘90s and early ‘00s. Working Girl is what I consider to be a defining rom-com. I’m seeing #TheDrama in a few & have absolutely no idea what to expect. My review is coming shortly.

100% People never had time for the trauma of gay men whose early lives were defined by AIDS and still don’t. The reality is. compared to the late Boomers or Gen Xrs, there are very few gay men who made it to 50 which makes old age even more isolating and makes it easier to dismiss us and our voices.

I relate so much to this. I came of age right as AIDS stepped onto the scene, and my life has been defined by being a gay man during a time when gay life was literally on the line.
I lost my partner to AIDS, but these days "queer" activists dismiss me & my life completely.

They don’t want people moving freely and quickly between cities that aren’t Boston-NYC-DC. They’re afraid the “wrong people” could easily leave the places they’re supposed to be in and “invade” communities. At least that’s why there’s no high speed rail in the Midwest. Instead we have bad roads with high crash rates.

That was only the case if you had a corporate job. Many young adults in the 90s worked crap service jobs for 5-6 dollars an hour (before taxes) with the average rent between $375 and $450. The idea that Gen X were all rich and owned houses and payed off their student loans before 30 is a myth. But the people who didn’t do that were considered losers because that’s what you were supposed to do. The system has been rigged for most people for a long time, it just keeps getting worse every decade.

The U.S. has oil and Venezuelan oil now too. The Iranian blockade is hurting Asian countries and will soon affect Europe and the UK and the amount of fuel and energy they’ll get. The U.S. said FU to Ukraine and it could potentially fall to Russia which might move into Poland - Trump doesn’t give a shit if Russia takes over countries as long as he controls Middle East oil. Europe is caught in the global crossfire. Trump said they’re on their own and they need to act like it BUT that means the U.S. has to move bases out of Europe.

He got tons of shit for Temple of Doom in 84 with angry dumb parents after becoming a ‘kid friendly’ director with E.T. and the Indian community protested the film as being racist. Even though it was a hit (and the most fun Indy) the negative feedback was the most he’d experienced since “1941” and was a factor in the creation of the PG-13 rating.

Creators are often the very worst critics of their own work. Case in point: Steven Spielberg and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Doom is the absolute best film in the series; most like 30s pulps, the one with the most period feel, the funniest and the scariest. The best!

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.
