Anomalies in #Antarctic sea ice concentration show the monthly variation from the long-term mean. This map from nilas.org shows more ➖ than ➕ anomalies for June. See the lack of sea ice in Bellingshausen Sea (arrowed), almost at summer ice levels in mid-winter!

What's happening to Antarctic sea ice extent isn't getting enough global media attention. And by "enough" I mean none. Nothing. This ongoing and dramatic collapse is completely absent from today's news. Yesterday's sea ice extent was 4.02σ below the 1991-2023 mean (1-in-34,000).

Check out this almost unbelievable time-lapse of wildfire smoke consuming the World Trade Center and the New York City skyline. Those vulnerable to poor air quality, including seniors and young children, should limit time outdoors if possible. More: AirNow.gov
