A thing I find interesting given revived interest in the NIEO: there was lots of contemporary critique of the old NIEO as a limited project for and by dependent capitalist states who were constitutionally incapable of challenging the terms of their dependence. E.g. Claude Ake:

Academic impact is a curious thing. There are such a large number of hugely cited pieces that are cited, first and foremost, as examples of being bad ideas or totally idiotic
