Here's the exact pitch deck that helped us raise $2M in pre seed funding. Almost 3 years later, I'm making it public.
Fun fact: we actually went out to raise $1M but it was this pitch that over subscribed the round and doubled it.
It was also largely composed of seasoned founders and operators of some really interesting companies, as opposed to big funds.

Excited to share that I've joined Vercel's Board of Directors. Vercel is made up of builders and tastemakers that continually ship things that deeply impact how developers work: Next.js, AI SDK, v0, etc. I can't think of a more exciting place to be. Let's fucking ship. ▲ My relationship with Vercel goes back to the earliest days. HashiCorp was an early adopter of NextJS and Vercel (~10 years ago!) and it remains my default tech stack and deployment platform to this day. Ghostty's website is all on Vercel, too! Beyond that, I've been continually impressed with the teams relentless focus on shipping meaningful software. And importantly, software that has incredible taste. Now we are in the age of agentic software development. Vercel is building agentic infrastructure that I think every app and agent will need (I certainly need it!) and I can't think of a more exciting place to be. Huge thanks to @rauchg , Jeanne, Marten, @cramforce, @tomocchino and the entire Vercel team for the warm welcome. Time to work.

We are good at sandboxes at @modal in several ways but scale is probably our biggest strength.
We run hundreds of thousands of sandboxes concurrently and lot of our users come to us because other vendors can’t support that.

The part about using KVM to get clones of VMs is easy. The challenging part at the moment is cloning sandboxes 100x times across nodes. The bottleneck is around moving bytes across machines.
We developed a hybrid approach of moving some data across machines directly, and some through blob stores. Also, requires tuning the network/RPC stack to move as much data the NIC allows you to.

I have come to believe that effective pitches take the path of standup comedy. You start with a pitch, workshop it with a number of people, refine it and repeat. Eventually you arrive at the sharpest version that kills every time. The mistake that founders make is they jump to a deck too early in this process. This actually slows down the speed of iteration, because who wants to friggin re-do a slide that you spent hours finessing. So in the early days of your pitch, just talk talk talk! Tell your story to as many people as you can, and pay attention to when they lean in. Cut what's boring, double down on what pulls them in.
