A-10: A single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild Republic, and the first United States Air Force aircraft designed solely for Close Air Support (CAS). It is tasked with supporting ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets with a limited air interdiction capability. Its official name, "Thunderbolt II," is derived from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II fighter-bomber effective at ground attacks; however, it is more commonly known by the nicknames "Warthog" or "Hog." The A-10 is built to be exceptionally rugged, capable of surviving direct hits from 23mm armor-piercing and high-explosive projectiles. Its flight control system features redundant hydraulic systems backed up by a mechanical system, allowing the pilot to fly and land even after losing hydraulic power or parts of a wing. In the event of total hydraulic failure, pitch and yaw control engage automatically, while roll control is switched to manual reversion via a pilot-operated switch. Although this requires significantly more physical effort than usual, it provides sufficient control to return to base and land. The airframe itself is designed to fly with one engine, one vertical stabilizer, one elevator, and half of one wing missing. While the A-10 can carry a payload of over 7 tons across 11 hardpoints with various external ordnance, its primary internal weapon is the GAU-8 Avenger Gatling gun, which fires 30mm armor-piercing shells with depleted uranium penetrators. The GAU-8 Avenger is a 30mm Gatling-style rotary cannon manufactured by General Electric. Mounted on the U.S. Air Force's A-10 Thunderbolt II, it stands as the largest, heaviest, and most powerful aircraft cannon in the U.S. military inventory. Primarily used for anti-tank warfare, it fires high-velocity 30mm rounds at a high rate of fire. By the way, "Avenger" means "one who takes vengeance."
