Buti Manamela has officially resigned from his leadership role within the South African Communist Party (SACP). Manamela—a heavyweight who originally ascended to Parliament on an SACP ticket—didn't just step down; he slammed the door behind him with a definitive pledge of allegiance to the African National Congress (ANC) ahead of the high-stakes November elections. For critics, the move is a classic case of political pragmatism. There has long been a whisper that ambitious figures use the Young Communist League (YCL) as a strategic "back ladder" into power, when the ANC’s internal front door is barred. Manamela’s departure turns those whispers into a loud conversation about loyalty versus careerism. While the SACP and ANC have historically operated as partners within the Tripartite Alliance, Manamela’s decision to formally distance himself from the Red Flag marks a sharp, individual pivot. "I will be casting my vote for the ANC this November," Manamela stated, a declaration that felt less like a simple choice and more like a tactical mobilization. By clarifying his intent to stump for the ruling party, he has effectively abandoned his historical roots in communist advocacy for the pragmatic machinery of the ANC. This resignation peels back the scab on ongoing tensions within the South African Left. Having secured his seat through SACP structures, Manamela’s "pivot" raises uncomfortable questions about the "vote-within-a-vote" strategy. Is the Alliance still a partnership of equals, or has it become a waiting room for ANC aspirants? In a fragmented political climate, Manamela’s endorsement is a shot of adrenaline for the ANC as they fight to consolidate a wavering base. The SACP Vacuum: The Party is now left to pick up the pieces, facing the daunting task of filling a void left by a man who once served as the vital bridge between radical youth movements and national governance. Manamela remains coy about whether this resignation is a precursor to a high-ranking, full-time role within the ANC’s internal structures. However, his message to the electorate is crystal clear: his heart (and his ballot) now belongs solely to the black, green, and gold. As of now, the SACP remains notably silent, with no official word on who will step into the breach left by their former prodigal son.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, has welcomed the decisive intervention by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in recovering R2.7 million misused funds in the Rubicon Communications skills development project. According to the department, the outcome sends a clear message that public funds allocated for skills development must be protected and used strictly for their intended purpose. “At the same time, the Minister has noted with serious concern the findings that the funds were depleted before the commencement of the training programme, effectively denying 100 learners access to critical skills. This represents a failure not only on the part of the implementing agent, but raises important questions about oversight, controls, and accountability within the National Skills Fund,” the spokesperson to the Minister, Matshepo Seedat.
