This isn’t about excusing everything or saying cultures don’t evolve. It’s about asking why the gap exists before you perform outrage over it. Context isn’t a get-out-of-jail card. It’s just basic intellectual honesty.

“Backward.” “Animals.” These aren’t just offensive words, they’re the same language used to justify every policy that got us here. You’re not being edgy. You’re completing the cycle.

Saw tweets mocking Pashtuns in Islamabad and Karachi for celebrating Eid “the wrong way.” Before you quote-tweet for clout, sit with that framing for a second.

Some Pakistanis sounding like Israelis right now. "They were Afghan terrorists" is the "everyone is Hamas" line. Innocent civilians were killed in Kabul, bodies being pulled from beneath the rubble and many turned to ash. Don't be like them. This is wrong.

Perhaps it’s less an ideological conversion and more a response to a decade of crisis, when institutions feel fragile, harder positions can feel like clarity.

I wonder what explains the shift. Disillusionment with liberal politics? Prolonged instability and economic strain? Diasporic identity anxieties? Or simply the way social media now rewards certainty and outrage over nuance?

It’s striking how many Pakistani voices, both at home and in the diaspora, whom I’ve followed for over a decade seem to have edged rightward. Not just politically, but tonally: more assertively nationalist, more jingoistic, sometimes less patient with ambiguity or dissent.
