@qo01q @empressleias You can’t infer the demographics of a niche community from the general population. AO3 isn’t a random sample of women. Claims about AO3 need AO3-specific evidence, and the surveys we have show a much higher proportion of queer users.

@Hiiamhere_e @empressleias except one of the claims can be inferred from broader demographic data, and the other is a baseless assumption

@empressleias If we’re dismissing self-report surveys as non-representative, then we also can’t confidently claim AO3 is mostly straight women. Both claims require evidence, and the surveys we do have consistently show a large queer userbase.

@Hiiamhere_e this is from a self-report enquete on reddit so it's a very small and non-representative sample size. lots of people who use ao3 don't reveal their identity (kind of the point of ao3)

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie Yeah I simply asked why do gay men date men who look like women and why do lesbians date women who look like men. I know sexuality is past genitals, how our partners look plays a role as well, it just doesn’t seem as important in queer relationships and I wanted to ask why.

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie and with ur example of the reddit thing that girl found that boy attractive ASSUMING he was a masc woman and that part’s important

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie I’m not trying to say they are being woman but it’s clear that that is their inspo. They want to look like pretty woman, why are you as a gay man dating a man who wants to be pretty like Madison beer or Megan thee stallion.

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie and because queer people don’t really fit the social construct they can do things like have long nails as man and wear makeup without being women and vice versa

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie Those things do equate to being feminine if not gay men wouldn’t be trying to do that. Same with lesbians, some even go as far as wearing durags and dressing like black men as in this society black men are “peak masculinity “ and queer people reinforce it everytime.

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie you are very much generalising and stereotyping because having a higher pitched voice, wearing makeup, wearing nails etc ≠ being a woman and same goes for when lesbians have prominent muscles. all those things are socially constructed to be seen as ‘for women’ or ‘for men’

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie It’s not really a preference it’s in the description. It’s ineveitable that I like men who look like men because I am a straight woman. Other than that you are questioning your sexuality and have so self reflection to do.

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie the answer isn’t because ur straight it’s because of ur preference which is a popular one, most straight women like masculine men but not all of them do.

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie Regardless that social construct still exists and queer people follow it all the time. Which is why the gay man that wants to appear feminine is also the “bottom” and the one who acts “womanly”

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie and ‘looking like a girl’ is a based on social constructs which again queer people don’t fit in to which is why it doesn’t have as much affect on them. which leads to a gay man being able to date a fem guy without thinking ‘he might aswell be a woman’ does that make sense?

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie No. I understand sexuality, I don’t understand why people ignore looks in a sense. The correct question is would I date a boy that looked like a girl. The answer is still no because I’m straight.

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie This was beautiful masc lesbian under boys posts. They say that Rodrick heffley is “masc” in reality it’s just a boy. That’s why I’m confused you clearly are attracted to how this guy looks and I don’t understand why if you are a lesbian.

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie also i have to add you’re exaggerating alot cus fem men alot of the time still look like men and masc women still look like women it’s not as if you can’t tell their gender anymore? and ik u said ur genuinely asking these questions but we need to use that brain queen

@deanboxmnch @zoomerswiftie No I understand not dating the gender you don’t want. But I also don’t understand a straight man who would date a woman that looks like Henry cavil. Because looks still play a part in sexuality.

@Hiiamhere_e @zoomerswiftie cus either way it’s not a woman… that’s like telling a straight man it doesn’t make sense for him to not want a femboy or telling a straight girl it doesn’t make sense for her to not want a stud or masc woman
