@arredondos @ejiltalk As a lawful military objective, the Exclusion Zone issue was quite irrelevant to it's targeting, though undoubtedly armed conflict versus war distinction and whether the LNW was applicable in its entirety is certainly fascinating. What aspect in particular did you have in mind?

Ukraine's attack on third state flagged oil tankers in Turkey’s EEZ raises the question of whether it's lawful to treat vessels contributing to the war-sustaining economy as military objectives? I layout the argument for why the answer is a resounding no.

Israel attacks an embassy in Syria and Iran seizes a Portuguese flagged vessel, operated by a Swiss company, crewed by Indians and owned by a British company which is controlled by a Monaco based individual. Welcome to the world of ship nationality.

Minutes ago, the U.N. Security Council voted to adopt Resolution 2664 (14 in favor; 1 abstention) in which it decided to apply a carve-out — in respect of most of its asset freezes — for activities of certain bodies that support basic human needs.

@PillaiPriy National Security in international law. NS has gone from being an obscure municipal context specific concern to being invoked in trade, investment, HR, environment, common spaces and use of force contexts. Particularly pertinent given the UNSC logjams.

#Internationallaw Twitter - canvassing ideas - what do you think are the most important issues today - as practice areas go, in academia, across various sectors - themes you come across in your work? A bit vague but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

@NC_Prime Very possibly. Just not Sun Tzu, Clausewitz or Thucydides. Did you have the (pardon the phrasing) 20th century control school of strategists in mind?

...strange bedfellows. Strategists consider law inconsequential in a world of power and force while lawyers consider strategy as crude and unrespectable. The end result is the compartmentalization of knowledge & a world plagued by problems made worse for the want of shared ideas.

Someone remind me what the light footprint, over-the-horizon, non-provocative, *but can still deter and fight a major power* force posture looks like. I’ll wait.
Rush Doshi@RushDoshi

@stephenwertheim For example: The piece argues "the US should significantly reduce its forward-deployed military presence in Asia" & acquiesce to the PRC in the SCS. But it should also "retain the ability to intervene if China threatens to become a hostile hegemon." These goals are in tension.

Modern-day economics had been built on certain assumptions: that actors seek to maximize their income above all else, that human beings are rational actors. But what was perhaps the centerpiece assumption of modern economic theory was not only wrong but, even worse, unhelpful.

@f1vladislav Indeed, there are certainly inconsistencies in the statements made by the Ukrainian port administration, given that the Administration of the Mariupol Sea Port itself states that that the average depths on the approach to the port are 8.6m (uspa.gov.ua/mpw/).

@f1vladislav @nmfindia The article does not discuss any impact of the bridge on the depth of the canal. It does mention how the bridge imposes physical restraints on navigation. Vessels above a certain measurement can now no longer use the canal.
