It is not that academic history in the university admits no heroes or villians at all, as a matter of principle whatever. Nazism and Fascism sort of function as the figure of Satan in western humanities academia, in the sense of being unconditional villian figures such that not only can anyone even talk about "neutrally studying" Nazism or Fascism, but anyone who is disliked is called a Nazi or Fascist. Like Abrahamics call anyone who worships differently from them as Satan worshippers, modern humanities academia calls anyone who does not share their view of academic history or polity as a Nazi or fascist, despite them having absolutely nothing to do with these ideologies. Imagine someone writing : No decent historian of the early modern world should have anything to gain from the heroes vs villians wrt Nazi/Fascist history. To be stuck in this framework is to not think like a historian. The Nazis/Fascists matter because of the world they built and its relevance today, not their excesses!! He would be cancelled instantly. Consider how academics frame Ottoman rule or Islamic expansion in India: the administrative innovations, syncretic culture, or architectural legacies get foregrounded, while temple destructions, mass enslavements, jizya enforcement, and engineered demographic shifts are downplayed as mere "excesses" or "context of the times." Yet apply anything resembling nuance to European colonialism or Nazism or Fascism or the Israel-Palestine Conflict, and the "heroes and villains" lens returns with full force and complete even with demands for reparations and moral reckoning.
