Cosmic horror creator H. P. Lovecraft once traded New England gloom for Central Florida sunshine. In 1934–35 he spent 2 summers near DeLand, rowing lakes, exploring pinewoods, and printing “The Cats of Ulthar.” The house still stands–an eerie, little-known literary footnote.

In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt designated Pelican Island in Florida as the nation’s first federal bird reservation. That executive order became the foundation of today’s National Wildlife Refuge System. More than a century later, this small island remains a protected piece of America’s conservation story. @America250FL 📸 Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, Acme Roto Service, Public Domain

This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor Winter Park's Mary Lee DePugh. In 1937, she founded the Ideal Woman’s Club in Hannibal Square, helping raise funds for medical care for Black residents. She inspired the Mary Lee DePugh Nursing Home, which served families for nearly 70 years.

In honor of #NationalCeleryMonth, let's talk about celery in Central Florida! After the Great Freeze of 1894-95 devastated citrus, farmers like I. H. Terwilliger pivoted to celery, turning Sanford into "Celery City" and saving the region's agriculture. A true underdog story!
