Hi #everyone, I'd like to come on here and bring attention to something. Historic Sri Lankan records ranging back to the 1700s have been from FamilySearch, one of the largest historical record repositories in the world in response to recent legislation. (1/3) #srilanka #SL #LKA

This law unintentionally erases Sri Lankan history. By treating historic registers like modern private data, it cuts off the diaspora and historians from their roots. Thus, we are losing digital access to our heritage.

Today is the anniversary of Dr. E. M. V. Naganathan's birth. He was a MP for Nallur and became a keen supporter of G. G. Ponnambalam's Tamil Congress Party. He was also a leading figure during the Satyagraha campaign against the Sinhala-Only Act in 1956 and 1961. #History #LKA

Even though the civil war ended already in 2009, the landscape still shows the scars of the long struggle. The beauty of this country cannot hide the pain of those still searching for their loved ones. 🙏 @ompsrilanka bring them peace and closure!

The failed coup had a profound impact on Sri Lanka's political landscape. The government used the event to crack down on dissent and bolster its own power, leading to a period of division and economic stagnation.

#OnThisDay (27 January 1962), a group of officers attempted to overthrow the Bandaranaike government. The plot was led by a young, lower-ranking officials who were frustrated with the government's handling of the country's economic and political issues. #history #LKA #SriLanka

As a part of my visit to the northern province in #SriLanka, I visited #Jaffna Fort and Public Library of Jaffna. The fort was renovated with support from the embassy few years ago. At the public library, I was shown ancient manuscripts on palmyrah leaves.

As always, this is NOT a support of the LTTE. Prabhakaran is a figure that must be examined critically. As a destructive figure, his life serves as an example of the ways leaders rise to power and a warning for the danger ethnic conflict can bring. Learn History!➡️ Stop Violence!
