FSU to close Jan. 23 due to icy conditions As overnight temperatures are anticipated to refreeze roadways and impact critical services in the region, Florida State University’s Tallahassee and Panama City campuses will cancel classes and suspend normal business operations for Thursday, Jan. 23. This includes the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and Florida State University Schools (FSU's K-12 charter school). Essential business operations will continue. Employees designated by their department as essential personnel should consult with their supervisors. A message to departments from Human Resources will follow with timekeeping guidance. The university expects to resume classes and normal business operations at 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24. University officials continue to closely monitor weather developments. Stay weather aware and use extreme caution, particularly when traveling outdoors. Ice and freezing temperatures have created extremely dangerous road conditions. Residential housing operations will continue throughout the closure. Seminole Dining locations will operate on an adjusted schedule. Updated operating hours will be posted on alerts.fsu.edu. Seminole Express buses will cease operations during the closure and resume a normal operating schedule Friday, Jan. 24. Please continue to follow alerts.fsu.edu for updates to campus services, and follow these winter safety tips: Melting ice and snow can cause falling debris, such as icicles or tree branches. Take caution when moving about campus, as walkways, stairs, and roads may still be icy or slippery. If going outside, dress appropriately for cold weather by wearing layers and know the warning signs of hypothermia (confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and stiff muscles) and frostbite (redness or pain in any skin area, white or grayish-yellow skin area, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy, numbness). Continue appropriate fire safety practices, such as keeping combustible materials at least 3 feet away from space heaters or other heating appliances and running generators outdoors at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and attached garages. If you must drive somewhere, check road conditions before traveling by visiting FL511.com or by using mobile apps, such as Waze and Google Maps, which allow users to report road conditions. Individuals on campus should call the Facilities Service Center at 850-644-2424 to report Facilities issues or the FSU Police Department at 850-644-1234 for other emergencies. For further information on the university’s status, official announcements, or situational updates, continue to check alerts.fsu.edu.
