THREAD: Over the last three years, I have been given the amazing opportunity of working with the British Army - guiding recruits and junior soldiers around battlefields of Northwest Europe on their Realities of War exercises. Due to the contract coming to an end, so do the tours.

In September 1916 “At times, I thought I had seen my final hour.” Weeks later, his regiment was sent back. I’ve just published a short video on his second tour of Verdun through his own words. If you like it please give it a like and comment youtu.be/6Rc0b1Z5sLc?si… #Verdun

110 years ago, Émile Driant and thousands of others were killed in the opening days of Verdun. To mark the anniversary, I’ve reworked my short film on the battle, told in 5 minutes. If you can’t name the four men pictured, then you need to watch it! ▶️ youtu.be/GoE6datjY4Q

#OTD 110 years ago, Lt Col Emile Driant was killed commanding his unit, who vitally slowed down the German advance towards Verdun. His final letter to his wife details his thoughts about the coming attack.

The command post, site of death, original burial site, and memorial and current burial site of Lt Col Emile Driant. A pre war politician and author of future war pieces, he is considered the first high ranking French casualty of the Battle of Verdun.

On 21 February 1917, the SS Mendi tragically sank, resulting in the second-largest loss of South African lives in the First World War. Help us keep their stories alive. #ForEvermore

Now 110 years, the Battle of Verdun started on this day, continuing for 10 months. If you'd like to learn more about thos battle, I highly recommend following @Ri315e - the work he has contributed to this area is truly incredible.

#OTD, 109 years ago, the Battle of Verdun - the longest of the FWW - commenced with an attack across an approx. 30km front. Continuing until 18th December, each side suffered somewhere around 400,000 casualties, and the scars of the battle are still visible across the landscape.

Back to it posting after an unintended, but appreciated, period away from social media. I'm back on the battlefields for two days, before taking my Maternity Leave! A Bedford House @CWGC visit where the crocuses are already blooming beautifully.

It is quite amazing how few people see these posts anymore. What was once a great way of sharing my illustrations with like-minded people seems to have vanished. If you do see any of my posts please do share them, it’d be nice if a few more people saw them. Thanks!

My sale of original works, including all my Great War and Normandy 1944 illustrations, is on until this Friday 19th December. If you’d like to get one of my original illustrations at a greatly reduced price now’s your chance. #ww1 #ww2 #illustration

On this day in 1917, the train accident at Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne took place. A train with approximately 1000 French soldiers derailed at about 100 km/h. More than 650 soldiers lost their lives. The army kept the disaster secret at the time, and even the media did not write about it.

Had such a great time on guide training, as always. Thank you to everyone involved: the office for organising, guides who volunteered to do stands. And a big thank you to everyone for being such great colleagues and friends! One more tour to go in 25, but now on to 2026!

“The British cemeteries seem brighter, more cheerful and cosy. I prefer the German ones. War was not a pleasant affair; it isn’t seemly to prettify with flowers the mass deaths of all these young men. A cemetery ought to be sombre.” German artist Kathe Kollwitz, who lost a son.
