Essay competition: it has been disappointing to find that five of the 19 best essays were written with substantial use of AI. They have been disqualified. The worse case was 95% AI. Wasting our time.

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, marking over 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. We remember the 6 million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. As survivors grow fewer and antisemitism rises, today is more vital than ever.

The title of the book is from a poem by Anna Akhmatova, one of Russia's greatest poets. She knew about the secret police coming "at dawn". Her husband had been shot by them. Her son and her common-law husband were both sent to the Gulag.

We are glad to announce that "At Dawn They Came" by Giles Udy is back up and available on Amazon. It is the most readable, concise account of repression in the Soviet Union in existence. Photos, maps and timeline, too. amzn.eu/d/j2XGpJF
