The next G8 summit in Russia was supposed to be held in Sochi in 2014, but then Maidan and Crimea happened and now we are where we are.

Het verbaast mij hoezeer de stemming in Rusland is veranderd. Vrijwel alle mensen, van experts tot taxichauffeurs, hotelpersoneel, obers en andere toevallige kennissen – geven aan niet te begrijpen waarom de Russische regering niet reageert op de openlijke oorlogsdeelname van de EU. De betrokkenheid van de EU bij de oorlog reikt van het kapen van handelsschepen met bestemming Rusland, via de financiering van Oekraïense raketten en drones en het ter beschikking stellen van veilige productielocaties voor Oekraïense wapenbedrijven, tot het verlenen van toestemming aan Oekraïne om het luchtruim van EU-lidstaten te gebruiken voor langeafstandsaanvallen op Rusland. Dit alles is openlijke deelname aan de oorlog. Daarbij komen nog manoeuvres waarbij de blokkade van Kaliningrad wordt geoefend, en talrijke verklaringen van Europese militairen en politici dat Kaliningrad moet worden aangevallen. De Russische regering beperkt zich tot nu toe tot de verklaring dat, als bewezen zou worden dat er drones vanuit de Baltische staten worden gelanceerd, er natuurlijk een harde reactie tegen de Baltische staten zal volgen. De Baltische staten reageren daarop door het aantal van deze aanvallen verder te verhogen. Men krijgt de indruk dat de EU-lidstaten willen dat Rusland eindelijk eens terugslaat. Dat zou niet meer dan logisch zijn, want het is een populaire strategie van het Westen om andere landen zo lang te provoceren totdat ze terugslaan, om vervolgens te roepen hoe agressief dat land zogenaamd is. De leiding van de EU heeft de oorlog nodig, omdat ze dan alle zelf veroorzaakte problemen (afbraak van de sociale zekerheid, energiecrisis, deïndustrialisering, enz.) daarop kan afschuiven. De Russische media blijven echter terughoudend en wakkeren geen anti-Europese stemming aan. Eigenlijk zou je verwachten dat er elke ochtend in de Russische media wordt gemeld hoeveel in Europa geproduceerde en door Europa betaalde drones vannacht in Rusland zijn neergestort. Maar de betrokkenheid van de Europese landen wordt, anders dan je zou verwachten, bijna niet aan de orde gesteld. Als men in Kiev en in de EU erop heeft gerekend dat de Russen, zodra ze de oorlog aan den lijve ondervinden, zich tegen hun regering zouden keren en een einde aan de oorlog zouden eisen, dan heeft men zich flink vergist, want het tegenovergestelde is het geval. De stemming is dat men nu hard tegen Europa moet terugslaan, en wel heel hard, zodat de elites van de EU begrijpen dat oorlog geen spel is dat hen niet aangaat. Iedereen wordt gevormd door zijn opleiding en zijn verleden. En naast zijn verleden bij de geheime dienst is Putin bovenal tot in de puntjes jurist, wat betekent dat hij er veel waarde aan hecht dat de verkiezingen rustig en soepel verlopen, zodat hij een duidelijk mandaat van het volk krijgt voor zijn verdere optreden. Wat Putin zeker niet wil, is dat de verkiezingen worden afgelast vanwege de staat van beleg, want het is voor hem natuurlijk belangrijk dat Rusland – in tegenstelling tot de junta in Kiev – een legitiem leiderschap heeft.
