It’s been 577 days since we have had our trail guides back in the building. It’s another step closer to students back at the Holifield! #outdoorlearning #thework

These are Bobwhite Quail eggs that Connemara recently donated to @HolifieldSLC. They’ve been incubating these eggs for a few weeks and today we received word that some have hatched! Students in @Plano_Schools were able to watch the hatching live on the Holifield Critter Cam.

Not necessarily. Bigger isn't always better. Owl's larger eyes are designed for absorbing more light, so their eyesight is better in low-light, but not in other conditions.

@CentennialPISD asks: Do these birds hibernate? No. There are a few select species of birds like the Common Poorwill that have been known to go into a short hibernation (called "torpor"). While the Poorwill looks a bit like an owl, it is not considered a raptor. #CampOnCampus

Skin color like this is due to things called carotenoids in the bird's skin. This is also what makes carrots orange. These birds don't eat carrots, but can't break down any carotenoids in their diet to make them colorless like we do, so this color is still visible in their skin!

Students from Andrews ask: "What kind of raptor is a secretary bird?" Secretary birds are kind of in their own classification of raptor (sagittarii), but are more closely related to hawks than say owls or vultures. #CampOnCampus @AndrewsEagles
