Looking for Growth
Is this acceptable? Since 1990, Spain has built nearly 7,000 miles of motorway. So ... what about the UK? We have built 422 miles of motorway in 35 years. 35 years – 422 miles. Thats only twelve miles every year. Why have we stopped building?

@markrwilliamson @ga_richardson For every penny spent investing in Cambridge, the economy would get pounds back. If we could build enough houses to affect house prices, it would boom.

World over, borrowing costs are rising - but UK has highest of any G7 economy as we're seen to be most exposed.

Three of Starmer’s nominees have already been brought down by revelations about their pasts. No one - literally no one - believes that the rest of us are here “through public service and merit”. We are a collection of quangocrats, trade union dinosaurs, councillors and ex-MPs.
Cabinet Office@cabinetofficeuk

This is the biggest reform to our Parliament in a generation. 🇬🇧 This morning, the 700-year-old system of hereditary membership in the House of Lords was abolished. Membership is now earned through public service and merit, not granted by an inheritance. ✅

Rachel Reeves says in the Mais lecture she will deliver "a break with the laissez-faire politics of the passive state". This will help boost medium-term productivity growth, she claims.

Why is this? High service charges (£8,700 a year for a 3-bedder 🤯), and concerns about cladding post Grenfell. All this makes it unsurprising that London housebuilding has collapsed - down 72% in just a year!

London has built lots of flats…but few people want to buy them Since 2014, some 20,000 flats have been completed in Wandsworth. But nearly 40% of modern flats there have sold at a loss in the last 5 years archive.is/A3rfy

@Telegraph Leaving has barely hit GDP yet the financial services industry is lobbying Starmer to stay out of any new deal.

@spectator There is something anti human about airports. The lighting, the queues, the indignity of security, getting there, the anti comfort measures purposely weaved into everything.

When was the last time you were shouted at by a stranger wearing a lanyard? Or spent hours in a crowded public space with low ceilings and no natural light? Or paid £8.50 for a Pret sandwich? I’ll wager it was in a British airport, the unnatural habitat of humiliation, discomfort and rip-offs. Not to mention ugliness, rudeness and inefficiency. ✍️ Owen Matthews Article | spectator.com/article/britis…

Illegal urbanism. This street with its generous 1st floor windows, tight form, simple surface & lack of parking would be nearly impossible to create in Britain today.
