【Revolutionising estate management with PropTech to support ageing in place】 During a site visit, Chen Rui, a Surveying student at PolyU, noticed that water seepage issues in housing estates often worsened over time due to a heavy reliance on residents’ reports, resulting in delayed repairs and higher maintenance costs. This observation inspired him to develop a “Snart Estate Management” solution, which shifts estate management from reactive remedies to proactive prevention. His innovation idea earned him the Rising Changemaker Prize at the Hong Kong Housing Society Award. 💡 Bridging the gap between technology and everyday community needs, Rui's proposal leverages PropTech to empower estate management. By integrating IoT sensors, AI image analysis, robotics, and drones, the system detects anomalies at an early stage. Upon receiving real-time alerts, property managers can arrange immediate inspections, significantly minimising disruption to residents. In view of the ageing population living in Hong Kong's public housing, this smart system can help simplify reporting process, enhance residential safety, and improve maintenance efficiency. This enables elderly residents to live more comfortably and independently within their familiar communities, truly realising the vision of Ageing in Place. ❤️ Reflecting on his PolyU journey, Rui shared that classroom learning, professional exchanges, and site visits profoundly demonstrated how building management quality directly impacts residents' living standards. These valuable experiences have inspired him to merge innovative technology with responsible management practices, fueling his dedication to creating a better living environment for the community! 🌟 #TheHongKongPolytechnicUniversity #PolyUStudent #WeArePolyU #MyPolyUStory #PropTech #SmartEstateManagement

【PolyU all-acoustics brain-computer interface system forges new paths for Parkinson’s disease therapy✨】 An ageing population is often accompanied by an increase in age‑related disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder that impairs body movement and which is mainly alleviated by medicines or surgical procedures. A research team led by Prof. Sun Lei, Director of the Research Centre for Non-invasive Brain Computer Interface and Prof. Qiu Zhihai, a PhD graduate and Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at PolyU, has developed the next‑generation “All‑Acoustics Brain‑Computer Interface (BCI) System”, leveraging “transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation” to deliver fully non‑invasive, deep‑brain and high‑precision neural modulation with ultrasound. The system presents a promising new therapeutic approach for treating Parkinson’s disease, as well as other neurological and psychiatric disorders. 💡 The team has validated the technology’s efficacy through animal studies. In the next stage, Prof. Sun will expand the scale of clinical validation. He plans to collaborate with five leading medical centres in China to conduct a clinical study involving 100 Parkinson’s disease patients and systematically assess the ultrasound technique’s safety and efficacy, paving the way for regulatory approval and commercialisation. 🏥 Looking ahead, the team also aims to partner with Hong Kong hospitals for clinical study and develop a more portable household version of the system, enabling patients to receive continuous treatment at home. 💪 More: polyu.hk/FxesE #TheHongKongPolytechnicUniversity #PolyUResearch #BrainComputerInterface #ParkinsonsTherapy
