I want to brag a little bit more about my friend, who I think is one of the coolest people I've ever known.
He isn’t just a Clemson man: he is THE Clemson man. He showed me some of his yearbooks when I was visiting once, and his wife proudly told me about all of his achievements.
While he was there in the late ’60s, he served as President of the Student Senate, President of his fraternity, and he won the award for Outstanding Male Graduate (the Sullivan Award, I had to look that one up). He also received some awards from the Air Force ROTC (after law school he was an Air Force JAG).
His wife is also a Clemson grad and was crowned Miss Clemson during one of her years there.
He loves Clemson so much that the suit that he wears to church on Sunday is lined with orange fabric bearing the Clemson logo.
He and his wife treat my kids like they are their grandchildren, and every 4th of July he organizes a community flag raising at his house to honor military veterans that is attended by hundreds of people.
In short, he's one of the best men I've ever known, and I can't imagine any Clemson alumni that has ever lived a more honorable life than him.

I have every Clemson game saved on my calendar.
No, I’m not a Clemson fan, and I’ve never even been to South Carolina.
But my neighbor, an elderly veteran paratrooper and Clemson alum who lives three doors down, is.
He struggles a bit with YouTube TV, so I check on him every Saturday.
Sometimes I stay, and we watch the game together, often with one or both of my boys.
He treats me like a hero every time I help him.
But as I walk past his office on my way out and see the wall covered in medals, gear, and awards, I’m reminded that I’m the one blessed by his heroics.
