Horstmann Trust is home to 3 cape vultures and we're working to raise awareness of the threats they, and all vultures, are facing.

Did you know that despite being listed as vulnerable, Cape vultures face becoming locally extinct within the next 50 years? In Lesotho and the Eastern Cape, the levels of illegal trade and consumption are so high that local populations could become extinct within our lifetimes.

Vulture beaks come in various shapes & sizes and are the perfect tool for ripping & tearing. Large vultures have powerful beaks that help them tear open carcasses & begin feeding. Smaller vultures tend to have long thin beaks useful for removing scraps & difficult to reach areas

A network of zoos & conservation organisations are working together to support the captive breeding of bearded vultures for conservation purposes.⁠ ⁠ We're very proud of the work we’ve done for bearded vultures so far & are looking forward to next breeding season!⁠ 2/2

❓ Did you know that there is a bearded vulture reintroduction programme in Europe?⁠ ⁠ Bearded vultures were once widespread throughout southern Europe and across into Asia and North Africa, but persecution has greatly reduced their range. 1/2

👅 Have you ever seen a condor’s tongue? Andean condors have rough tongues that allow them to scrape every last bit of meat off a bone. Paisley was treated to some minced food and it allowed us to see her tongue perfectly!
