Alcohol can cause serious and lasting damage to your liver. There is no safe level of alcohol consumption. Cutting back, or stopping altogether are powerful steps towards prevention. #WorldLiverDay #SolidHabitsStrongLiver

Today is #WorldLiverDay, which is the perfect opportunity to recognise one of the body’s hardest-working organs. As the largest internal organ, the liver performs over 500 vital functions every day, from converting food into energy and storing essential vitamins, to fighting infections and removing toxins. Because the liver works so hard, looking after it can have wide-ranging benefits for your overall health and wellbeing, helping to reduce the risk of developing preventable liver disease. This year’s theme, “Solid Habits, Strong Liver,” is a reminder that small, consistent lifestyle choices matter. Eating well, staying active, limiting alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight can all help protect your liver and support long-term health. While around 90% of liver disease in adults is preventable, there are tens of thousands of people living with autoimmune or genetic liver conditions that cannot be prevented but can still benefit from steps to improve liver health. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Ahmed Elsharkawy, a dedicated trustee of the British Liver Trust and a passionate advocate for people affected by liver disease. Ahmed brought extraordinary commitment, insight and compassion to everything he did. As a consultant hepatologist, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of patients through earlier diagnosis and better treatments. As a trustee of the British Liver Trust and Children's Liver Disease Foundation, Ahmed was a thoughtful and principled member of our Board. He was generous with his time, supportive of colleagues and unwavering in his focus on what mattered most – better care, greater awareness and better futures for patients and families affected by liver disease. Those who knew and worked with Ahmed will remember not only his expertise and integrity, but also his warmth, humour and kindness. Ahmed leaves a lasting legacy in the progress made towards improved management and care for liver disease, with a particular passion for improving diagnosis and outcomes for people with viral hepatitis. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the British Liver Trust and across the liver community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.

EASL is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr Ahmed Elsharkawy, consultant transplant hepatologist, researcher, educator and valued member of the EASL Governing Board. Ahmed served EASL with honesty, courage and a deep commitment to the community he cared so much about. He was never afraid to speak up when it mattered, always guided by a strong sense of fairness and integrity. His leadership helped shape important initiatives that will continue to benefit the liver community for years to come. Beyond his professional achievements, Ahmed will be remembered for his warmth, humour and generosity as a colleague and friend. Our thoughts are with his wife Sarah, his children, his family and all those who knew and worked with him. @DebbieShawcros1 @analleo

If you or a loved one is living with decompensated cirrhosis, your experience matters. We are supporting researchers at University College London (UCL) who are asking patients to share their views through a survey to better understand how digital systems could be used to improve the care and support available for people with cirrhosis.
