"Jumping the Broom" was a cultural custom practiced by enslaved Black Americans whose marriages weren't recognized by the State. It fell out of popularity in the decades following emancipation, but picked back up after the 1970s. 🖼️ 1899. #HotepHistories

There’s been a deliberate severing of the past and the present. As someone who spends countless hours researching the ancestors, I’m telling you they sold us a bill of goods on how these people lived. Damn near none of it is true. All you have to do is read.

Black American History starts in 1526, the latest. Some say 1490s. That’s at or over 500 years of documented history. Out of those 500+ years, you’ve mainly been taught slavery (barely) and 1940-1970. That’s ~6% of your ENTIRE history that you know of. Shut up and #ReadMore.

@UsingLyft @hoodservative I’m saying that I’m older than the term itself. It has been misused for years by lazy millennials with no decorum and can’t read. There’s no “politics” to wearing decent clothes and behaving properly in public. That’s just called being a regular person.

The term was created by Evelyn Higginbotham in 1994. In her book, she detailed Black women in the church during the late 19th century creating social and cultural standards for Black churchgoers. It had NOTHING to do with trying to be like White people. Y’all just don’t read.
