Last week and this morning handling American oystercatcher chicks and adults on Pea Island NWR to give them some lovely green jewelry! For all the people who ask if I am a game warden when I say I work with FWS

progress report after only 5 days of flooding this impoundment to create desirable habitat and hopefully invite black rail populations to a freshwater marsh rather than their usual salt marsh homes.

one of the coolest experiences of my life happened this morning: I got to watch a mother sea turtle finish laying eggs and return to sea, then i got to relocate that nest and another further away from the high tide line to prevent washout. incredible start to the day!

Starting Monday I’m a field tech and wildlife biologist for Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Manteo, NC, and I could not be more excited to spend the next months not only working there but living in the Outer Banks as well. Feels like a tailored opportunity!

This #EndangeredSpeciesDay, let's celebrate conservation success stories big & small – including six wild red wolf pups recently born at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. 🐾 These are the first pups born in the wild since 2018!

Calling all mite people! I have this funky little specimen from my first subterranean pitfall trapping run that I desperately need help identifying. The front legs are very distinct so I was hoping one of you wonderful folks would recognize it!

How funny, males of this butterfly species and I both like to bask while perched in tall grasses on hillsides and mountaintops. Such a great pastime! This is Papilio demodocus, the citrus swallowtail, who migrates to nearby peaks to begin courtship.

A local legend, that to the untrained eye (mine included, full disclosure) looks almost identical to our VA state insect! Papilio appalachiensis, the Appalachian tiger swallowtail, a hybrid species that comes from P. glaucus and P. canadensis.

Another quite sizable Lepidoptera, possibly the largest and most well-preserved underwing moth I’ve come across, the marbled underwing, Catocala marmorata.

Protographium leucaspis, a swallowtail with a substantial wingspan and two observed subspecies; P.l. leucaspsis and P.l. lamidis. The subspecies are most often differentiated by the cell-spots on the forewings

One of many many remarkable Papilionids in the VTEC, the South American Swallowtail, Eurytides Stenodesmus. This one was collected by Ellison Smyth in Mexico!
